Should EE go on a break June - August?
Because it feels like the show goes on autopilot filler mode each and every summer. I'd rather the show stopped airing (but kept production going) and used the 3 months to write better stories the rest of the year, and perhaps squeezed in a 5th episode each week. Thoughts?

Its a good question and one I feel all soaps should consider. With Doctors currently taking a break from filming maybe this will make the others question the need to give particularly the backstage staff a break.
It can't be easy to keep coming up with storylines over the whole 52 weeks of the year without running out of ideas or the staff feeling tired from the long days of filming and all the other stuff that goes on that we don't see on screen. Certainly its easier for EE compared to the others as they don't have to fund their show through advertising revenue. I don't feel ED or CS would ever be able to take a long break but maybe they could take at least a 4 week break each year? |

No - why should the show go on 'hiatus' just because you din't like the current storyline - just because in EE the summer storylines tend to feature the more minor characters doesn't mean they aren't quality as a lot of people on here think. This past cpouple of weeks has shown that the minor characters can be as good as the stars if they are given the right material. We get this 'summer is crap' guff every year with EE and I fail to see any basis in it.

I don't think we will ever see Corrie or ED taking a long break as it would hugely effect the advertising revenue, however with the BBC it's a little different.
Personally I would be adverse to EE taking a two week break whilst the Olympics are on as during this time many people are away on holiday anyway. |

I don't think this summer is feeling as bad as previous years, still a fair bit going on.

Eastenders effectively shuts down for the Summer anyway, happens every year.

Man murdered in homophobic attack os the show on auto pilot? There is loads going on. I would suggest you take an EE summer break like I did with Corrie. |

The only positive I see in having a break is leaving huge cliffhangers before going on the hiatus to drive up the ratings for its return.

I sometimes wonder why the UK soaps don't take a break during the summer holidays when ratings are low. Home and Away does this for 6-8 weeks in summer in Australia and the last few weeks it always builds up to a massive cliffhanger that causes suspense for the break amongst fans and it usually returns with a massive promotional campaign and usually higher than average ratings for the first week

The Irish soaps used to go on hiatus during the summer. Only very recently Fair City became all year round.
The channels ITV and BBC are somewhat reliant on the soaps as they are often the biggest draw. Personally, I like my soap if an evening. If Im not in the mood for I watch or do something else. I took an extended break from Corrie a while back. But six episodes,a week Ill never watch. The beauty of soap; you can step back in 😊 |

I think that one lf the good stories should be left for the summer. Mix the filler stories with the other big stories but always keep atleast 1 big story for the summer.

Viewers would get out of the habit of watching and knowing ITV they'd put 2 eps each of Emmerdale and Corrie on its slots because you can never have enough, forcing EE out of the schedule altogether.

No. Often the summer starts storylines which reach their climax in the Winter months. Without this build up, the storylines conclusions would not be as satisfactory.

It's not a bad idea. Or cut back an episode.

No, that would be boring. I like watching Eastenders throughout the whole year.

I don't think we really need 'breaks' - I think we need less episodes full stop. Four episodes a week of a 'big' soap is plenty. Five is just a bit too much and I'm sorry, six is insane.

It would give the show a kick up the backside which it really needs.

No, it has had some good episodes this summer, most notably this week. Not everybody wants to go out in the evening and if soaps were not on the telly, the summer would be even more boring as it is with all that boring cricket and golf, etc.
