Maybe that bit with the mattresses wasn't shown in every country? Or something else was shown? I just struggle to see how anyone can see anything but mattresses there. And again, I am not being rude, I am genuinly wondering if fox sent two different endings.
Admittedly I was watching on a computer screen in fairly low res. |

I don't really get all this miserable or depressing episode talk, it's The Walking Dead I don't expect them to all sit behind a fire singing kumbaya, it's always been grim and depressing.
It's also never really been about the zombies, it's about the characters and in a lawless world you will get these bad people rising up. But I think all 3 communities will join together and fight back eventually. |

I didn't find this depressing. These episodes are fine as long as you can interpose some joy and fun.

They've now got four different communities, so could easily get a baseball league started.

Why does everyone think that Negan would have been killed a long time ago? He is providing hundreds of people with relatively safety, food and shelter in return for them working for him, he might have been a complete arse to some of them but im sure not the majority. Kind of like saying how come one of Hitler's men didnt kill him? or Stalin? or any other ruthless leader in the past

Never mind concrete, I thought it was a downed light-aircraft or drone or something.
I'll explain. When Michonne's on the car, something makes her turn around, and off in the distance in the top right hand corner of the screen, I noticed a relatively large, black object seemingly out of control, and I thought that she'd heard it and went to investigate. When she then comes upon a mass of smoking, grey material, I couldn't make out what it was, but I assumed it was whatever had fallen out the sky. It was only as she got closer I realised it was the mattresses, and what I saw was just a big bird. That's the trouble with this show. You start looking for little things in the background that might be significant later, and sometimes you find you're completely wrong about them and it really was nothing to do with anything.Michonne was upset because she wasn't there when the raid took place; she only heard from Rick that they took the mattresses. Seeing them burnt like that, when even Rick doesn't know, told her that they didn't take them because they really needed them or even wanted them, but simply because they could. They're obviously a huge deal to the group, but meant nothing to Negan other than a petty show of power. |

The first distance shot did look like the ruins of a smoking building (made from concrete slabs) it was only when we got the closer look it was clear to me they were the mattress'.

Even when watching on a 50 " HD TV it wasn't apparent to me that I was looking at mattresses .It looked like something hard that had melted . Walking Dead seems to be taking itself too seriously now and has gone all "Art Movie" with poor storytelling in my opinion .

I think Negan's main problem is that he comes across far too cool and cocksure. In reality, a far better fit would be to make him more serious and paranoid - he must know that he is on borrowed time being such an arse?

As a fan of TWD since episode one, the much trumpeted introduction of Negan has disappointed me. So far he's been a completely one-dimensional pantomime villain in the vein of Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham - as soon as he appears I roll my eyes and await the inevitable long (oh so very long) monologue as he struts around, flashing his teeth and leaning slightly backwards to make a point. All that's missing is a moustache to twirl!

I completely agree with you. This Negan character is boring me to tears, the actor's OTT scenery chewing was mildy amusing for less than a minute - last night it was interminable, going on and on and on, the same thing over and over again.
Quote:
As a Big Bad I found The Governor to be much more menacing and scary because he was so unpredictable, Negan is just a thug who is announcing to all and sundry what he is about and what he is going to do. Negan is an irritant, I hated the Governor with a passion, only when they dragged the Governor's demise out did he become a pantomime baddie sadly Negan is there already.

Well I'll be the voice in the wilderness - I'm loving the new season.
I am a very rare reader or contributor to this thread and the pointless negativity has reminded me why. We're four episodes in and have barely scratched the surface of Negan as a character yet apparently the good people of DS have him all figured out already. If he comes across as a pantomime villain it's because that is how he sees himself. He sees himself as untouchable. Why would he ever show fear, or cowardice, or anything other than arrogance? |

Negan is an interesting character in my opinion, every time we see him it's like he's putting on a show and that's how he has to be. But the writing and acting is always good on this show, puts me on the edge of the seat every Monday. |

The criticism isn't about how Negan sees 'himself'. It's about how the writers and the actor portray him, and so far, he's come across as very one-dimensional, with all the range and depth of, as has been said, a below average pantomime villain. Maybe on paper and on the storyboard they see this as mysterious and enigmatic, 'untouchable' even, but writ large in 3D acting and spoken dialogue, to many people it's boring and repetitive.King Ezekiel is a good example of a character who puts on a completely different personality in front of his subjects, but has been shown to be nothing like that when he lets his guard down (assuming this doesn't also turn out to be an act). If Negan in fact has a guard to let down, we haven't seen it yet. All we've seen is the arrogant, sadistic prick side of him. |

No you shouldn't but maybe needs reminding, if people thought that episode was depressing perhaps they're new to the show?
True, I suppose some people will be jumping on to the series for the first time, in which case I would urge them to go back and watch from season 1, that way they'll see TWD pretty much at its best, and also how much both Rick, and Carl have aged .

Honestly, if I were on the show I think I'd rather be beaten to death with Lucille than have to listen to Negan's inane ramblings for ninety minutes.
![]() I'd also ask him how he expected the group to gather this stuff he wants without the necessary tools (guns) to do so? It is a zombie infested world after all. Even with guns Rick's group doesn't have the numbers to defeat the Saviours so that shouldn't be an issue. |

We couldn't tell that it was the mattresses burning either - wasn't until Chris Hardwick mentioned it at the start of Talking Dead that the penny dropped!
Carl had the chance tonight though... with a gun and could've easily taken out Negan at close range - without Negan, the Saviours would probably scatter into smaller groups fighting for supremacy. I'd much rather be seeing what's happening with Morgan and/or Carol at the moment though, where it's not quite as much of a hard grind - the constant breaking down of Rick, and showing his subservience to Negan, can't keep going on indefinitely without some response... If viewers could just try and watch the episodes instead of planning how they would change them...There were so many excellent elements to last nights episode, Rosita, father Gabriel and Megan's reaction to him, some of negans quips were hilarious, Dwights creepy interest in becoming Daryl, Rick talking about Shane and Judith. Negan finding the video tape of 'bad ass' rick and comparing it to broken rick was heartbreaking. |

I thought it was quite a poor episode actually, and not justifying the longer time. Negan rocked up, took their guns, took some other stuff... and erm... not much else.
It's a shame as I thought ep2 and 3 were quite good as a follow up to the brutal opener but the pace just drained right out of it. The could at least have thrown in some Kingdom/Hilltop stuff to mix it up a bit. |

I find Negan very interesting, tbh.
When he told Rick to be careful how he (Rick) looked at him, it was so tense. I dont see any pantomime villain, I see a narcissistic madman who knows exactly how to cast fear in people's hearts. To break someone, you must find their weak point, and that is what he does. Of course, this behaviour will only last for so long. But for now, it works. The people of North Korea, why don't they act? Because you can not simply kill the King, you will have to destroy the entire court. |

Did anyone else think Darryl was blinking morse code?
There was a morse code poster up on Wall in Rick's house and Darryl was doing some fairly suspicious blinking when Rick was looking at him. |
