Oh, I don't mean he's like Reek in GoT and has forgotten who he is or anything like that, simply that he recognises and accepts the utter futility of his situation and knows he has no choice but to go along with it until, as you say, he can see a way to change the odds. Negan's not trying to break Rick mentally or physically. He just needs him at the point where he'll do
anything Negan says, and it looks like he's pretty much there. For a cop and natural leader, that's got to be hard to accept.
You could even look at it another way and say that far from being broken, Rick's displaying great mental strength by
not twatting him when he had the opportunity, because he knew the retribution would be dire. That was Negan testing him, and Rick passed, so you could say Rick's stronger than ever. Trouble is, the end result is still the same.
