Oh God, this is one of those questions that I think will prove impossible to answer! There are so many songs that I love from the fifties and sixties right through to the present day, both popular and non-mainstream, that I don't think I could limit it to forty. I could name forty songs at random, then a couple of minutes later come up with another and spend ages working out which one to remove to fit the next one in, I just don't think I could come up with forty that i'd be fully satisfied with.

The other problem I would have besides too much music to pick from is that as a youngster I was mostly into rock and some metal or punk bands but as I got older I started drifting towards more middle of the road and easy listening stuff that in previous years I wouldn't have gone anywhere near, so any list I did come up with would have a rather odd-looking combination of musical styles and genres on it.

Surely Love Me Like You would have to be the Magic Numbers one. Anyway I have dozens of self-mades and wouldn't bore anyone with them here. I do however have a Hot 100 I completed recently. I remember The Who were at number 100 and Genesis were number 1.

I actually burned a couple of compilations for to listen to at work, but due to technical issues with the crumbling CD players (which I've previously mentioned on DS) they can't actually be played and I had to spring for a copy of '100 Hits Alternative' as a stopgap. The discs themselves are still sat in a box at work, waiting to be played in the event of a functioning player turning up, and if I can dredge up the tracklistings from wherever I wrote them, I'll drop them in here later. Of course, they're not 100% what my perfect compilation would be as the sets were tailored to my workplace and limited to what I've got on MP3, omitting 90s/early 00s stuff I have on CD.

I've pulled up the tracklists for the two CDs I burned for work. Whilst this isn't really a complete spectrum of my record collection - needs moar Twin Atlantic, Cable, Little Mix, Hurricane #1, Kate Tempest, Mansun and Carly Rae Jepsen for starters - it's a fairly stable snapshot of some of my most-loved of the last few years... (Could crosspost most of these to the 'nobody else on DS has these' thread, too...)

CD1

14. Foals - Miami
15. Rooney - When Did Your Heart Go Missing?
16. Elle S'appelle - Little Flame
17. Golden Silvers - True No. 9 Blues (True Romance)
18. Chvrches - Recover
19. Cold War Kids - Miracle Mile
20. Karmin - Brokenhearted
21. The Envy Corps - Rhinemaidens
22. The Kooks - Forgive and Forget

CD2
1. The Boys of Summer - Things In Twos
2. The Wonder Villains - Blonde
3. Friendly Fires - Skeleton Boy

10. The Hosts - Give Your Love To Her
11. The Good Natured - Skeleton
12. Pull Tiger Tail - Animator
13. Benin City - Bus
14. Everything Everything - Distant Past
15. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Garden
