Sony phones - what is eating up my internal storage?

Hi, I have a Z3 and my girlfriend has an M4 and both our internal storages are completely full and i have no idea what's eating the storage. I delete things but each time I check I see the available storage going down and down and now I can't even update apps. When I installed marshmallow I had around 3 gigs left and within days it went down to a few hundred meg. I'd like to think I'm reasonably clued up but this is really baffling me and quite annoying. I know 16gb internal storage (8 for the Mrs) isn't much these days but I can see the same problem occurring in no time even if I had 32gb.

Slightly related but it's very frustrating on Marshmallow that now when it says low space you can't transfer apps with photos and videos etc to the memory card. You have to now go through each app after every update and manually transfer it back to the sd card. I know you can fuse all your memory together now but it's only really worth doing when your phone and card are new. I don't want to wipe my current sd card just so I can do this .

It should tell you under storage what everything is using so you can see what is using up all the space?

If only it were that simple. All my big apps are generally on the sd card too so I can't really delete any to make much difference. I deleted a game a few weeks back which was 400mb in size and within days all the free space had gone again. It's completely baffling me. The operating system using 4.4 gb does4nt help much either.

Since writing this my internal storage space has got even less again. Now showing 15.94gb used instead of 15.93 an hour or so ago it's like I'd have to delete almost everything and I'd still only free up a gig or 2.

How much is in the cached data in storage settings, also look at disabling any bundled google apps that you dont use.

Definitely look at cleaning the cache. Even from an iPhone perspective. I remember the first time I actually got a junk cleaner for mine and freed up nearly 250mb of space in one hit.

Thanks Gavo, I have now disabled a few of the unused Google apps that I don't use and got my storage down a little to 15.82 gb used. It's now creeping up to 15.84 used after just a couple of hours. This is completely doing my head in. I'm constantly clearing the cache too.

If you use Google play music, Spotify and such like, they can build up quite a bit of data in the cache over time, maybe check newsstand and Facebook & snapchat if you have them as they can swallow up lots of storage

I also have an M4 and pretty much half the internal storage (8gb) is taken up by the Android software (4gb). Other than it's just a case of getting an SD card and moving what you can I think.

Sort your apps by size in storage settings and list a few of the biggest ones for us to have look at to see if things look normal.

I seem to recall the album creating a lot of thumbnails (I had loads of photos on the SD card) but now I have Android N it came without this or the other Sony apps and I haven't reinstalled them.

Also all those pre installed Google apps which are classed as system apps increase in size with each update via the Google Play Store leaving you with less and less internal storage space all the time for other non system apps.

I use Clean Master about once a week to clear out the junk. It's amazing how quickly it can build up: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...guard&hl=en_GB

(Other cleanup apps are available but this is the best one I've found)

The good news is that the m4 aqua will soon get a software update that allows you to free up the internal storage in some respects.

Check your back up files. I was running out of space and found that back up files were taking up almost 3GB!!

No sign of the original Z getting update, no surprise I suppose.

If you go to settings ==> phone storage. It should give you an idea of what is using storage.

Currently my phone's internal storage is using:
System: 7.55gb
Apps: 6.46gb
Images: 1.53gb
Videos: 3.23gb
Audio: 0.00
Downloads: 45.85mb
Other: 161mb
Cached: 2.1gb (i cleared this and its now down to 2.81)

Have a look and see what the biggest for you and then work out from there you need to do.

This app here is also decent and cleaning up the junk on your phone:
