Evelyn was very self-aware there and more mature than Alex by far.

She dealt with that very well at the end there, although she shouldn't have been apologising to him - he knew she fancied him, he knew that he didn't feel the same way, he let her continue to believe in the possibility of them.

Cold as marble . In a situation like that it's fine to tell a wee lie or two to make the person feel better about herself . Admit more fault than you feel and give a matey non-sexual hug and tell her not to fret and that she didn't make a fool of herself but just got a bit over keen .Be a gent (or lady) in such a situation .

He is being authentic, real. Your idea of 'consoling' her would be to lie it seems, i.e. underplay the situation. He did the right thing - to give her the green light in such actions would be not looking out for her...can you see that????
