Maybe this was a coincidence but a couple of weeks ago I bought a Replay DVD in Poundland. I hadn't bought one of their "Replay" dvd's before. Anyway the dvd started off fine but about halfway through the film froze then moved on a bit just to freeze again.
I hadn't had any trouble in playing dvd's before on my laptop but after playing that dvd don't know if it was a coincidence but after that I have certain dvd's that don't seem to play anymore. Could the Poundland dvd have done something to my laptop?

Is Replay a certain label/distributor of DVD? Never heard of them before

They call it Replay because its been previously owned before and whatever company buys it reconditions it before it's put on sale in Poundland.

Don't see how a dvd can damage your laptop? I don't even think the laser touches the disc does it?

Only if the disk breaks up as it spins or there is a serious mechanical fault with the mechanism.

Also struggling to think of a reason why simply playing a disk could affect the laptop. Unless it is just pure coincidence that some other fault occurred at the time. Something I have seen is a build up of gunge on the rails that the laser carriage runs along jamming the carriage at a certain point.

Whether it's possible to get at the mechanism easily enough to check and clean the rails if necessary is another matter of course. But if it's one of those with a tray that pops out then the mechanism is likely to be fairly accessible to check for any mechanical cause.

Probably just a coincidence that the drive decided to fail when it did, as opposed to the disc itself being the cause.

It may be something as simple as a dirty lens, or as mentioned aboved other dirt or gunk on the moving parts.

The only think I can think of is grease on the central spindle. I used to keep cleaning the hole in the centre of the disk.

Have you tried using a different DVD player, or uninstalling and reinstalling the one you used?

Could it be a Region issue? What Region are the DVDs that won't play?

Before going any further, breath on the discs and gently wipe them with a Kleenex tissue from the centre outwards. Cures lots of CD and DVD problems.

I rarely buy used DVD's now. I used to buy from blockbusters, but a lot failed.

I buy boxed sets from charity shops, as they generally have been personally owned, and not ex rentals.

used blu-rays are different though. rarely have an issue with a used blu ray.
