i was always surprised that they actually killed him off, wonder whether it was the actor's choice

He was the best thing about that Era, and he was not in anyway your standard villain, so many layer's to this character. But they did not see the potential he had.

I disagree as I never liked the character in anyway - I for one was glad to see the back of him, permanently!

Should never have been killed off, a fascinating character played superbly well. Would have been much better to have left that door open for a possible return. Sacrificing him for janine's exit was ridiculous.

My all-time favourite EE character. I think it was Steve John Shepherd's choice to have him killed off, or at least he was very supportive of the idea as he had no plans to return. He didn't feel the character could realistically continue after everything he'd done.

Him and Janine were the best thing about the godawful Kirkwood/Newman era. I liked that Michael was unpredictable so you never knew what he was going to do next, and that he also put Janine in her place a few times (like when he had her by the throat against the wall with one hand and fixing his tie with another ).

I found his death really good. Yes it was sacrificing an excellent character but I think it was the actor's choice to leave so they may as well have made a good story out of it. Newman did a good job on that and the Halloween episodes were fantastic (maybe DTC had a hand in but when there was no drama in the show for months on end and this happened it was brilliant).

I have a feeling if he'd left but wasn't killed off and returned at a latter date he would have became very tiresome one note very quickly.

I think he left whilst the character was still good.

Sometimes you have to know when to leave the party

Agreed -I think if he'd stayed much longer there would have been big yawns after a while. Him and Janine did feel like sometimes they were rehashing the same scene from different angles.

That wasn't unique to them surely? All couples scenes eventually fall victim to that.

The extent of it felt unique although not the phenomenon itself.
The intense mind games between them could become wearing at times.

I suppose wearing someone day is all part of it.
Just watched when Derek beat him up and he just sat there and cried.

He kept me watching for 3 years, during an otherwise atrocious EE period.

Everyone on here thinks Derek had raped him, after watching it again. I can see where they are comming from, there looks like there is more to it.

One of my favourite characters. He reminded me of Moriaty from Sherlock.

I always took it that after actually physically exerting himself for once (during the beating), Derek had to pull his trousers back over his protruding gut. It's not like he actually did his zip up.

Michael was basically a child trapped in a man's body (at least emotionally-wise), and Derek beating him up took him back to his childhood where Derek physically bullied him and he was traumatised by his mother's death. For me, that was why he was crying.

The heavy breathing? It was all very uncomfortable.

Where was Eddie during the bullying?
The Branning siblings, David Wicks even?
