I know this is probably more for boys than girls but I like history so am interested in this, however Im findign it hard to see what is going on. In addition, are the teams both talking and planning in front of each other? If so, how does that work if they know each other's tactics

I'm detecting a class-system undertone here.

Nonsense of course. But enjoyable nonsense.

I really enjoyed that.
The Roman General (James ?) seemed to be a bit of a pompous tool but claimed the victory anyway. |

Entertaining enough but it should have been called a draw.
1) Scorpio gave orders after being killed 2) The remaining army couldn't have taken the city faced with a moderately determined joint force of sturdy washerwomen and ill-tempered ladies of the night. Overall it was the worst blood bath since the fist time I refought Gettysburg and only one artillery unit survived. |

Why is it the graphics software seems to look and behave worse than that used in the last series all those years ago? I was expecting a massive improvement to compare with today's leading games.

Yeah Aryeh is now Lynette after a gender reassignment a few years back. Looks from the trailer that this series maybe based around Napoleon Total War, which is a good game and robust engine, but quite old now (2010).

The graphics are far better (as expected) than the first time around. Quite good overall; felt like it would have been better suited to 45 minutes, and Wallace jumping around and shouting what the teams should do was somewhat unhelpful.
I quite liked James - "Because then more young men of Rome will die. Then I have to write the letters to their mothers, do I not?" ![]() I might be wrong, but I'm fairly sure I've seen James' team on Only Connect/University Challenge. |

All I could think of was jabbing Wallace with a Gladius. Preferable in the voicebox and achilles so he couldn't shout and leap about.
Other than that I quite enjoed it. |

I have to be honest, I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Greg Wallace's enthusiasm actually fits the style of the show quite well, a bit bombastic but it works here. I liked both the experts and the clips of intense weapon usage demonstrations.
True, there was a bit of confusion at times, but that resembles ancient warfare pretty well. All in all, good stuff, I'll tune in for the rest of the series. |

Waterloo next which is a bit disappointing as personally I would prefer if the series featured battles that aren't so well known

Either that, or Gregg just shouts over them. |

IIRC Wellington lost thus presumably causing all kinds of chaos in the resulting timeline. |

What was missing last night was the re-run of the battle as it actually happened in history which they used to do.

Pretty good
Liked: + The Team V Team aspect is a better idea +I also like those mini skirmishes before the battle as a kind of tutorial for the teams, its the starter before the 'main course' + Production Values seem better than the old series (even though this is BBC4 that was BBC 2) + Improved Graphics (as you'd expect years later) Disliked: - The demonstration team doing little cutaway pieces on how weapons worked. Good idea but done with awful fake banter and scripted phrases. - 3 Episodes??? Seems small, they should have commissioned at least 5 |

By the way the Time Commanders mini-page on the Total War website has a pic of
Rome 2 Total War: featured last night Napoleon Total War: featured next week and whilst week 3 hasn't between announced the last pic is of Attila Total War, so its safe to say week 3's battle will be set in the early Dark Ages. Shame Shogun 2 isn't being used, so many interesting battles were fought in historic Japan, and it's a subject that doesn't get much attention on UK TV. Plus who doesn't like to see samurais! https://www.totalwar.com/time-commanders/ |
