- 3 Episodes??? Seems small, they should have commissioned at least 5
Makes sense to see if there's interest before committing to a longer series. It wouldn't be too difficult to get some more going in fairly short order if this is a success.

I wonder if there's some sort of block on Creative Assembly trying to piggyback off the publicity for the show- not having some kind of discount going on Steam for the Total War games seems like a bit of a missed opportunity.

and whilst week 3 hasn't between announced the last pic is of Attila Total War, so its safe to say week 3's battle will be set in the early Dark Ages.

It did strike me that the posh bloke who was the captain seemed like the kind of person that would have been made a general for real if he had been born 100 years earlier. Not because he was necessarily that talented, but just because he had the right background etc.

OK, I am prepared to admit that Gregg Wallace was not as bad as I had feared. In fact, his enthusiasm seemed to fit in quite nicely.

Enjoyed the first episode immensely so it's a shame that there will only be two more – hope the BBC make some more next year!

Was a bit surprised the romans won after being so hopeless in the skirmish. Both teams seemed to try their best to lose.

Why isn't the death of the commander factored into the situation? The battle wouldn't simply continue as if nothing had happened.

Why not? It's not chess.

In the Total war game engine this show uses it is, the loss of a commander causes a morale drop amongst the troops, making them more likely to panic and run away.

I was a bit disappointed with Waterloo.

Team Napoleon were not allowed to make any use of the third of the French army sent after the Prussians.

The actual result of Waterloo hinged on the waste of these men who failed to remain between the Prussians and Waterloo

I've been disappointed with both episodes so far. Any pretence of any kind of tactical battle has largely gone out of the window after the first encounter with the enemy.

The speed and complexity of the game has overwhelmed all the commanders and the battle and the on screen portrayal of it have both been too chaotic to generate much entertainment.

It would be better to reduce the game speed so that commanders have more time to assimilate and react to what's happening. If necessary they could ditch the skirmishes and some of the historical background to make room for it.

Dear lord the Roman commanders this week are an utter shower. The bloke captaining is utterly clueless and the general keeps fixating on single enemy units. Even Gregg is having to tell them what to do.

Yeah I felt this last episode was ruined by the incompetence of the Roman team.

This is so dull compared with playing the PC games yourself that I gave up halfway through episode one.

I really enjoyed the series over all and I hope it returns (just in case anyone from BBC Four reads this thread).

The Romans barely won in real life. More like a winning draw.

Yes, a pyrrhic victory indeed.

I preferred the original series' set design and the way the battles were shown with cgi generated over an actual battlefield diorama, much more viewer-friendly and easy to discern who was winning.

This programme isn't real is it? I presumed it is a prank that everyone is supposed to get?

Yes, that's a fair point as the middle-aged team this weak seemed to be selected for satirical purposes only.

446,000 viewers for the first episode, putting it sixth most watched on BBC Four for the week. Doesn't make it into the top ten in week two, but ratings for that week generally were slightly higher.

I tried to get into this, but found it hard to see what was going on a lot of the time. Was surprised at how well Greg Wallace fitted in though, thought he was pretty good. They just need to convey what's going on and what the teams are doping a bit better.
