I coulde see Eastenders late night working well, but It would be strange for either Corrie or Emmerdale
A late-night special would be the perfect time to show Audrey teaching Luke a few tricks.

BTW Danny, I've checked the thread I posted in the other day about the link to the BBC summer trailer thing but no one replied so I guess it hasn't been uploaded anywhere.

Aw. Thanks for trying though.

I guess I'll just have to watch BBC One 24/7, I'm bound to spot it somewhere.

Which soap is the most realistic in that it's for the most part true to life?

Tonight I suffered from memory loss. I forgot when the last episode of Hollyoaks without Peri had been. She must have been in every episode for 2 weeks or more by now.

I think she has, because before this we had the bullying ETC

I agree to an extent with Corrie as there are a lot of everyday mundane scenes, and in that respect it represents everyday life. However, everyone working within such close promxity to where they live, and only having relationships with those on their doorsteps is not relastic Not to mention the amount of fires /deaths/ explosions on one street!

I don't think that Eastenders is representive of the modern day east end, and again the amount of killers walking free etc just isn't true too life.

I actually think that Emmerdale is the most realistic out of all of the soaps because allthough everyone still only interacts and works closeby, It makes sense because it is a rural village, so It can get away with more than the other soaps.

Do you think realism matters in soaps?

I briefly watched Hollyoaks a bit a few years ago, and I remember It being the storylines being told in blocks, e.g a group of characters will dominate for a few eps in a row, then disappear for weeks on end, then the story returns, not having progressed, Is it still like that? Obviously all soaps do it but I remember it taking it to the extreme!

Pretty much. Recently it's been Peri, Nico, Warren, Sienna, Adam, Jesse, Neeta Mac, Maxine, Darren, Nancy, Jade and Alfie TBH

Meh. I think it's nice to be somewhat realistic, but being honest, a majority of people live "boring" lives (as in not a lot happens on a day-to-day basis). No one wants to watch someone wake up, go to work, come home, eat and sleep.

Also, whilst it's not too realistic for everyone to live so close, it'd be even worse if they lived on different streets - the likelihood of X and Y meeting at Location A and Location B would be really slim, and the soaps would get moaned at for that etc.

Yes, I take your point, and obviously soaps do have to have an element of realism so that viewers can relate to the characters and their lives, but there is also the opportunity for storylines that require suspension of disbeleif, but there's that fine line I think between being too realistic and being too over the top, the former will bore the viewer, and the latter might make them switch off because It becomes less enjoyable as a result. As the panel were discussing in the soap super brand thing, striking the balance between those two factors is difficult.

Wow, this was very in depth for me I'm not normally one for these long analysis type posts!

You said a while ago (on chatzy I think) that you had some ideas for your own Corrie, would you be able to share some of them? (It doesn't have to be a long post, just a few brief bullets or something )

And let TBTB steal them all? :P

I had actually planned to bring back Daniel Osborne. Played by Max Bowden, he'd have a frosty relationship with sister Tracy. Bethany would develop a crush on him. He'd be an ambitious young man, with plans to run his own business one day (I'm not sure what).

A few months in, Underworld would go bankrupt, with a big supermarket brand planning to buy the lot. Cue several meetings in the community centre of the Underworld staff, as well as residents such as Norris, Rita, a returning Emily etc, planning a protest to save the factory. Sally would obviously be on the fence, unsure of which side she's on. After a big protest in the factory, it'd either end with a fire ripping through the factory and killing the likes of Dev, Fiz, Sean, Caz, Robert etc, or it'd end with them being unsuccessful in the protest. Either way, Underworld would close, making way for a supermarket set.

Dev's former shop would be converted into some kind of business.

Sarah and Jason (who was still around back then, it was just before Carla's wedding) would begin dating again after sleeping together. However, Sarah would grow increasingly paranoid, and come close to admitting the truth to Jason. After a flood in the Platt's home, the floor of the annexe would be water damaged, and - with there being a hole underneath - would collapse, unearthing the body. Tony would return in time to see Jason arrested for murder. Tony would go on a mission to discover the truth, and Jason would be released when Tony somehow (can't remember how) manages to pin it on Phelan, despite him not even being in the area at the time! Either that, or Tony blames it on himself and calls the Police on himself before going on the run, to protect his son.

There was some more stuff, but it's on my laptop and I'm on my phone.

I'd also either introduce a new family for the Rover's, or test the waters with putting the Platt's in there - Nick and Leanne as Landlord and Landlady (but friends, not a relationship), Gail as a cleaner, and then Eva, Sarah, Steph, Daniel (Osborne) and possibly another new male character could make a strong setup for the pub. Basically, I wish the Bistro setup was in the pub.

I hadn't decided if I'd do that, or bring in a new family.

Obviously there's more stuff for different characters

I like the idea of a new Rover's famiy, the beauty of bringing in a new family is there are fresh stories to tell because they are new characters and you can create the history etc.

The rest of the stuff sounds interesting, particularly Jason being arrested for the murder instead, I was going to go down that route too

Yeah I had some better ideas but it's on my laptop.

I like new families, but maybe problem with doing Fanfiction Soaps is I tend to make the cast too big because of returns as well as my own characters. But it's just a bit of fun so I just try not to go too overboard, and just get over it if I do

Yeah, I've got some episodes I need to post. I generally just post stuff in The Games Room that I intend to post elsewhere, but I want to throw ideas around first ETC

I'd like for Norris to have a son that he never speaks to as they fell out. The son and his family buy the Rovers.

Curly returns to romance Liz

Dev sells the shop and Reg Holdsworth buys it up alongside his new wife... Cilla (Chesney and Fizz mum)
