Phil's death was still shocking for me 15 years later. The death itself was horrific, but the following episode where his mam was phoning round people to say that he had been found dead was harrowing. The others slowly realising that they hadn't been in touch with him since the night he died and that he'd laid dead on the kitchen floor for God knows how long was horrible. Similarly, the funeral scenes were uncomfortable to watch and very much depicted what it was like to be a gay person at that time. As much as gay rights had moved on, they were still pushed to the edges of society with many people questioning their supposedly dangerous 'lifestyle' that revolved around drugs and unsafe sex.

I think Cucumber is definitely a show targeted at the older gay man. I'm only 30 but there are little bits of it that are starting to make more sense to me as time goes on. In fact, I had an experience last weekend where I suddenly thought of Cucumber and another part of it clicked into place. It was the bit where Henry childishly squeals 'One more cock!'. At the time I thought it was just a crass line and a bit ridiculous, but after (yet another) bad experience with a guy, I've started to come to the conclusion that most gay men are always hoping/wishing/dreaming/looking for that elusive 'one more cock'. I don't think any of the messages in Cucumber are as overt as they are in QAF, which shows how Russell T Davies has developed as a writer.
Phil's death was shocking, it was definitely one you weren't expecting and it was horrible. I think they said he had been there for 4 days before anyone found him, which in itself is horrifying enough. There was a scene where Vince was trying to call him but of course not getting through. That's true, the funeral was quite uncomfortable to watch. I do recall watching this short film about a gay man who had died and it was his funeral and the vicar said that the person should have never been so stupid to 'follow that lifestyle'. I did have to remind myself that the short film wasn't real though.

I think that was the aim of Cucumber, to aim for the older gay man whilst Banana was aimed at younger viewers. I certainly felt more connected with Banana anyway and I think I liked that one more. I found that 'one more cock' line humorous at the time but it seems a lot of gay men can relate to it. Sorry to hear about your bad experiences with men, I can say I have that problem also, some experiences have been pretty scary IMO.

Greetings All.

Forgot to say the other night I watched the soap secrets video when it was first out last year but skimmed back through it after it was shared on here mainly to see the comments of Kate Oates as she is starting at Corrie now and was glad to hear what she said about a stunt needing to be deserved. With talk of a possible stunt later this year I hope she would aim to deliver a decent build up and aftermath and not just a ratings peak.
Yes, we were all singing her praises on here after we watched it and rightly so I think, I agree with everything she said, she seemed the most "clued up" for want of a better phrase than the rest of them. I agree It's encouraging to hear what she said about the stunts needing to be earnt.

RTD obviously loves a shock death, as Lance's death in Cucumber was shocking too. Funny that Phil's death was an understated drama in what was an overall 'out there' show, whereas Lance's death was a graphic and gruesome death in an overall understated show. If that makes sense.

I still try to hold out some hope that men aren't all bad, but with each bad date it gets harder and harder! I don't want to sound like a dried up old prune but it's bloody hard! The funny thing is that the older I get, the more childish the situations I keep finding myself in I'm sorry to hear about your bad experiences, though, especially if they were scary. I'm always here to talk if you ever need a wise (haha) sounding board or shoulder to cry on.

I completely forgot about Lance's death! Didn't he get hit on the back of the head with a golf club or something? Or was he stabbed? I really can't recall but there was definitely blood and it was shocking. RTD is an excellent writer though, spot on for humour. Yeah that does make sense, the messages Cucumber gave out were a lot more subtle than QAF which was more bold.

Yeah I agree with you it's really hard. I do hate to say this but quite a lot of men are bad, I mean like you say not all are bad, just a fair few of them! Thank you KK, same to you, they did happen a long time ago but sometimes they just get stirred up again and the scariness of the situations come flooding back.

I've just noticed that the Soaps Super Brands thing was at the Edinburgh television festival which is held annually, and the next one is 24 - 26 August, so we may get a new video with the soap bosses this September!

Yes. Lance got hit round the head with a golf club and we saw the whole thing, even the blood and brains dribbling out from his head. A horrific end to an essentially good character.

I think a lot of men just don't have a clue what the hell they want out of life so just go along lurching from one disaster to the next, not really realising who they hurt or how badly they are doing it. I don't think that most of them actually set out to do bad things, they just end up doing them by default. Gay men are especially bad for this. Or perhaps I'm just naive, even at 'my age'

I think he is supposed also be producing some other drama's for ITV

maybe he enjoys writing and wants to do something he enjoys.

I can't have been the only one gullible enough to check The Games Room?

I think one day we might see Kate Oates become head of the ITV soaps and drama (I don't know what the title is).

That was it, it really was horrifying to watch especially since we saw the whole thing. I did like how we saw his life flash before his eyes, and the whole episode featured flashbacks to his past also.

That's basically it, lots of people don't know what they want out of life but end up hurting other people in the process. Of course there are people who know what they want from the off which is good, but i'm sure lots of people can account for being hurt by other people, but like you say, most gay men are bad for doing it. I couldn't think why though.

It wasn't their first incest thread either. Did anyone see the Gail & Nick one a while back?
