Couldn't agree more. I find that I am actually stopping to listen to what the characters are saying. The little conversations and 'nothing' interactions are really serving the show well. I feel that SOC is writing the characters more like how neighbours would interact with each other, there's no shoe-horned in, unrealistic friendships but more so these 'moments' between characters that usually would not even look at each other.

I am really enjoying it and think it's the best it has been for a long time. The prev producer seemed to want to be producing a different genre of TV and it didn't work his love of fan fiction and ret-conning was ruining the show”

I found this the other day: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1832591 (it's a link to the thread which has bits of the interview but not the full thing) and it's an interview with Matthew Robinson, who SOC worked under during his time on the show and I cannot help but see the similarities between Robinson and SOC. I feel that he will be really good for EE and his period will be a great one, very much like how EE was.

The storylines like you said are being built around normal everyday occurrences and it is so much better because you care for the characters and the storyline has a bigger impact overall.

Might as well post this. A link to all of Matthew Robinson's blog entries. Enjoy.

I agree, plus characters talking to others who they may have not interacted with before. One of the main scenes I loved was the men sitting on the old sofa outside the Fowlers' new home having banter and just passing time, there has been a real lack of that in recent years and bringing it back has given the show a new lease of life. I wouldn't be surprised if SOC has the no nonsense approach Julia Smith had in the early days and therefore the writing and directing has been whipped into shape.

Yeah, definitely Atti. I'm loving it! I loved that scene along with those involving Stacey and Bex, Sharon and Jane, Patrick and Dot, Whitney and Lauren (at the sleepover the other night) and even Carmel in her scenes with Donna and then Belinda. I'm not used to EE being this 'quiet' and thoughtful, if you know what I mean? Usually it can feel as if characters are 'trapped' within their own storyline bubbles and cannot communicate with anyone outside it.

Yeah I get what you mean! Characters felt very 'isolated' and wouldn't really communicate with anyone else out of their story, but now it has a much more community feel and characters being themselves and not OTT versions being out of character.

And if the did, it was usually to growl and snap at each other other something petty - because EE is 'gritty' remember?

It's so much better, it makes the 'filler' actually watchable. I like characters being more like normal people rather than caricatures.

I really look forward to each episode now, you just know that each scene actually means something and is connected to a storyline rather than being there because there's hardly any big stories. It feels very realistic and normal but it so watchable and enjoyable, plus the episodes go really fast now instead of dragging.

Completely agree and, ultimately, the more we learn and begin to like/dislike about the characters then the more meaningful the effect will be on us viewers when the die/leave etc. The little things add up to the important where stunt after stunt, sensationalism after sensationalism with nothing in between leaves us numb and bored.

Yes exactly, if there is sensationalist stories time after time with nothing in between, it will burn itself out which it was at risk of doing. SOC came in and completely changed that, making every scene contribute towards a certain storyline and it is great. When the big s/l's actually happen (or rather when the climax to the story is reached) the fallout will be brilliant because it doesn't have to try and top the previous storyline.
