Having done some testing between my iPhone on EE and a Vodafone SIM on my Nexus 5 whilst recording the call data with QXDM from the Nexus, it appears that when a call goes through EE's IMS core (VoLTE or Wifi Calling) it isn't HD voice to Vodafone but only when I dropped my iPhone manually down to 3G did the call become HD Voice / AMR-WB 12.65Kbps.
EE on Wifi Calling first then I went to VoLTE over 2600 then 3G @ 2100 (obviously). Vodafone CSFBed down from 4G @ 800 to 3G900 (2938 ARFCN) |

Very interesting - so EE and Vodafone are linked directly without going down to POTS and back again, so able to carry AMR-WB codec. I didn't expect that until VoLTE as per previous post.... surprised.

Just tried an EE to Vodafone call. Definitely HD voice on EE 3g but not on VoLTE or wificalling.

I hadn't really expected it full stop. Strange that it works on 3G but not on EE VoLTE. Seems strange

I'm not sure the phone is able to distinguish whether or not the phonecall is connected through HD voice to the other end. The phone will be able to detect what codec it is sending/receiving, but won't be able to tell whether or not it has been decompressed at the network level.
My Three G4 shows a HD calling icon against all contacts when it's on 4G, but obviously the phonecall would only be HD if I were ringing another contact on Three. |

I just received a call from an O2 iPhone on my EE iPhone. Definitely HD voice today, first time I have heard that.

Has anyone had an HD voice call to someone who's not on 3?
I am with 3 but have yet to encounter one between someone else who's not on the same network. |

I've done some testing with different numbers being called from an EE SIM and can confirm that EE 3G/VoLTE to O2 3G and EE 3G (but not VoLTE) to VF 3G are HD, but could not get any HD voice with Three.

Initiated a call on EE VoLTE to my sister who is on O2, HD voice throughout the 22 minute call. The call ended with 3G my end but there was no loss in quality.

I'd say it's less to do with them being an MVNO, and more to do with it just being the technology the underlying network is deploying. There isn't really a reason to exclude MVNOs from it. At the end of the day it's just a phonecall. When the local O2 mast was upgraded to carry 3G and 4G, mum's calls to her friend were HD (O2 Business to Tesco Mobile - MVNO).

Looking at the anecdotal evidence in this thread, we can conclude the following:
Vodafone - EE = Yes Vodafone - O2 = Unknown Vodafone - Three = Yes O2 - EE = Yes O2 - Three = Unknown EE - Three = Yes ...This assumes that once an HD voice relationship between the networks is set up that calls made from either network to the other can be HD (It'd be horribly complicated if, say, Vodafone dialing EE could be HD, but EE dialing Vodafone could not). Anyone able to fill in the Unknowns? |
