It always used to be a tabloid news item - with a photo behind the pump and what number barmaid she was.... usually with a list and/or a barmaid reunion.
It used to be a big deal - but with Steve, Liz and Michelle working there - there are too many chiefs and no need for Indians. Plus Sean and Eva flitting here there and everywhere - Sean somehow managing to be seamstress, barman, cook and wedding planner!!! Utterly ridiculous and I think they need to keep him to the factory - I'm convinced Cotton knows something
The last long term barmaid that wasn't MacDonald related was Tina.- back to my point, is it because it's seen as sexist?? or just that the staff is just stale? The new barmaids often brought new dynamics, new relationships and a fresh atmosphere - someone like Raquel, Gloria, Shelley, Tina Fowler (I loved her short stint).... they weren't a regular in there drinking - offered a job just as they needed one....they were NEW characters!
Bring back the barmaid!!!!

Yes there's been some great barmaids in the past, you're right it was quite a prestigious role. The 90s and 2000s saw some great cast - Eva Pope, Samantha Failsworth and Geena Gregory as well as the ones you mentioned. Maria, Leanne and Jenny Bradley have all done stints behind the bar. Now we have Michelle crossing her arms, Sean folding his tea towels and Steve occasionally gurning his way through a shift. Eva is the best of the current crop and the only one worthy of her place.

Its happened over a long period of time so I hadn't even thought about it but you are absolutely right! Being a barmaid there used to seem like they wouldn't take just anyone, and the women they had working there had to be properly trained up and there was more focus on their job and role in the pub and their relationships with everyone who came in. Even in general the pub seems to have lost a lot of the glamour it used to have as a featuring spot in the show...now it seems to mostly run itself and is a lot more of an invisible backdrop than it used to be.

Can I make it clear I was referring to Gloria Todd of the 80s and not the inexplicable car crash that was Gloria Price (I'm still baffled at how she panned out - Sue Johnston is always excellent and should by rights be a natural on the cobbles....)

I think the whole Rovers setup needs an overhaul, the McDoanld's second management has become as stale as the fireproof decor.

Sick of the ghastly McDonalds. The management never worked first time around, they've become extremely stale, Steve is a much better character elsewhere, and the backroom feels like a horrible clique.

Who does the catering? Who cleans? Why is Sarah just content with bar work, she bloody worked in Milan for a fashion house!

Say what you like about Stella and the Prices, but at least the writers bothered to put a new slant on things. It's always the same old crap with Michelle, Steve and Liz. Bring in a new family!!!

TBF when Liz got the barmaid gig, she was having money troubles and explained to Gail (?) over a drink at the Rovers; Bet intervened and told her bar work was going. Liz admitted she had no experience but was a keen worker, so Bet decided to give her a trial. Alec gave her a tour, and the rest they say is history!

Liz was a wonderful character back then, she worked her way up from barmaid to capable manageress during the 90s. I don't recognise her now.

Agreed; Liz is no St Stella. I thought her return was a backwards step..

And well, said, Bellgerence.
