The bottled beer spotters' thread
For those who prefer to buy their beer from a supermarket or off-licence, I thought it might be a good idea to list them here, completely separate from cask-conditioned ales, which are unfiltered, unpasteurised and served from the barrel without the aid of additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide.
Sadlers produces an excellent wide range in my opinion, with McMullen's Hertford Castle Ale being another which doesn't suffer too badly from being bottled. |

Or we could just be grown up about it, act like adults and understand that threads evolve. Talking about beer in a thread about beer isn't too ridiculous to me.
I mean, have we got to create a whole new thread for canned beers, do we create a new separate thread for bottle conditioned and non-bottled conditioned? Do we need a separate thread for "craft beer" or a separate thread for keg beer? What about those beers that are dubbed as craft but are available in both cask and keg? Wow, this is going to be a lot of different threads! Or maybe we could be grown up, open our minds a little and just have a thread about beer. If I'm listing 6 beers I've had on a night out it seems a bit silly listing them in 4 different threads. |

I agree, it's impossible to get Real Ale in a bottle or can.
Assuming this thread sticks, I can heartily recommend Sea Fury by Sharp's. It's an ESB, 5% and it's really moreish when drunk chilled. Definitely not Real Ale. |

Not at all. We had a thread about real ale and it suddenly became not about real ale. It's really quite simple.
So you're saying that it's Ok for this thread about bottles to evolve into talking about cans or keg for example but it's not OK for other threads to evolve? It's no different. By your logic we'll end up with about 10 different beer threads. Thanks for your concern and for appointing yourself as some kind of moderator though. |

![]() It's like an old stuck in his ways Jack Bauer sat in his retirement home eliminating thread terrorists one by one. "CODE RED! CODE RED! We've got a mention of Black Sheep Bitter in the real ale thread but damn it, he doesn't mention if it's cask or bottle. Where does it belong? God damn, this is my biggest challenge since the nucular threat on The President in 2008! I will get to the bottom of it though! You have my word". |

Why don't you just discuss bottled beers instead of arguing like a load of 12 year olds!!

A couple of weeks ago I was in a pub in town and had a pint of Black Sheep bitter on cask. Later that day I was round at a friends house and I had a bottle of Black Sheep bitter. I won't lie, they pretty much tasted identical. Now, are you telling me that if I do the same again I've got to make two separate posts? One in the real ale thread and one in the bottle thread? |

No but it just seems you are intent on oneupmanship.
We all like cask, keg, bottled and cans. Agree to disagree. We all have different tastes. I can't afford to drink in pubs, so I buy cans and bottles. Don't look down on us. |

I'm not looking down on anyone, I'm the one that is saying "good beer is good beer" regardless of how it comes, I mostly drink bottles and cans at home which is what I was happily discussing in the other thread (as well as real ale and other beer types).

I started a new thread because the title of the other one was 'Any fans of real ale out there'. That would seem simple enough to understand, yet it turned into a discussion about supermarket bottled beer, which bore no resemblance to the original intention. It seems that both topics deserve their own thread but they aren't interchangeable. My intention was slely to rationalise it and avoid confusion. You wouldn't go to a thread about German Shepherd dogs and expect to find it filled with a discussion about whippets.

Simply trying to perform a service for those who are fans of real ale and expect to find that a thread about it sticks to its subject matter. Anywhere else, all these intrusions would be described as spamming.

Going by your logic it'd be "spamming" to mention cans or keg in this thread so therefore they need their own threads so a simple thing of recommending a few beers you've had on a night descends into 4 different posts over numerous threads which is silly. What about the many beers available in all forms? It's far simpler to just have a thread where everyone just discusses beer. Not everyone who reads the thread is going to be as set in their ways and unwilling to try new things as yourself so many will probably appreciate reading about different things, I know that it's not just been myself discussing a variety of beer. |

As I have no horse in this race, can I make a suggestion? Two things:
1) We ask a nice mod to rename the old "Real ale" thread to "Beer" 2) We ask our friendly mod to copy the useful information from this thread into the newly-rechristened old thread, and then delete this one Does anyone have any objection to that? |

Can I please also ask people to have a quick look on page 3 of the "real ale" thread. Not sure how I missed it before but right there on page three you will find the person who created the thread (a guy named "realale") actually asking people "what are your favourite canned or bottled beers?" Even the thread creator was talking about them! |
