Cat with mouth tumour
My thirteen year old Silver tabby Max has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour called Gingiva Squarmous. Apparently it's a really common form of mouth cancer in cats.
We first noticed a reddy brown discharge from his mouth then a small lump under his chin. Our vet has advised that its a very fast growing malignant cancer with a terminal prognosis. On line suggestions indicate that its probably weeks but there are some cats that seem to survive longer. The lump is bigger now but the vet took the teeth out of the infected jaw under a general anaesthetic so the discharge and discomfort is alleviated. He is eating as normal (all his treat food of course- minced chicken, tinned crab, tuna pate! ) and is still affectionate and playful, calling to go outside and playing with the younger cats. I've lost several cats over the years so I'm very sad but prepared. However I want to keep him with me as long as he isn't suffering. Has anyone else had experience of this form of cancer in animals? What could I expect? I'm monitoring his eating carefully as this would be a sign of distress. |

I'm so sorry to hear this bad news, hobbes,
Whilst I don't personally have experience, I do know that Jackson Galaxy dealt with a cat who had a very similar condition in his "My cat from hell" series a while back, and he persuaded the owner to have him operated on. The operation was a success. Havng just looked for the condition, the prognosis doesn't seem quite as bad as indicated by your vet - link |

Thanks Blueblade. I'm not keen on putting him through any surgery. Its quite advanced. He had a great weekend though- out playing and lazing in the sun all day. It's weird the younger cats seem to know not to rough house with him yet they both lie near him when he's resting. I know you shouldn't humanise cat behaviour but I like to imagine they are looking out for him!

Whilst I don't have experience of a cat with a tumour I do have experience of a cat with end stage renal failure and she then delevoped a problem with her legs / spine. There came a day when I just knew she was ready to go. I can't put into words but there was a day we had a "moment" that sounds so cheesy but even though she had had off days before there was a time when we were having our cuddles that she she put her paw on my hand and stared into my eyes (even though she was blind by this time). I just got a completely different vibe from her that I had never had before. I'm convinced she was saying "it's OK, I'm ready to go". They might not speak the same language but animals certainly can communicate. If its your cat you will just know. Spoil him with love, fav foods, put the fire on - do whatever you know he loves. I'm sorry for the pain you are going through right now x

One of my old cats had a mouth tumor the down turn was quick and obvious she stopped eating and wouldn't move from the bed. It was clear she was ready to go and there had been no sign of previous suffering.
I can't say it will be the same for your boy but I'm sure you will know when it's time to let him go however hard it is. |

Awww my lovely Max went to sleep last night. He really deteriorated over the weekend. bleeding heavily from his mouth and stopping eating. When he was first diagnosed with cancer back in June the vet said maybe a couple of weeks of active life and we've had a coupe of months so I feel blessed. Night night my sweet prince.

We've just taken our 12.5 yr old tabby (Tigger) to the vets and been given the bad news of cancer (a tumor under his tongue). They gave us some steroids to give to him that hopefully reduce the swelling. Don't know how long he has left but he's alright for now. I'm gutted.
