She's American.

Brilliant ONLY means "intelligent" in the US. The second meaning which roughly equates to the way Americans use the phrase "excellent" does not exist in the American lexicon.

So any Brit reading this and thinking it conveys approval is dealing with a cultural misunderstanding.

^^^^^THIS^^^^^^

Here (USA) brilliant used as a synonym for clever or intelligent:
adjective
1.
(of light or color) very bright and radiant.
synonyms: bright, shining, blazing, dazzling, vivid, intense, gleaming, glaring, luminous, radiant; More
antonyms: obscure, dark, dull
2.
exceptionally clever or talented.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what she said. If they remove her for it I shall send a strongly worded tweet in protest.

Ah yes. I'd forgotten about the meaning that literally is about intense light.

So more accurately it's a THIRD meaning of "excellent" that doesn't translate/never was intended by her.

I don't think she meant he was brilliant like a cut of a diamond (noun version of the word brilliant)

edit: I didn't see the British version in the web dictionary that I used but from context, I took the UK version to mean "excellent" or "awesome" (I think Katie Weasel changed awesome to brilliant in her VT since she didn't want to sound too American)

Oh gawd, are they going to axe everyone who has an opinion? jeez, the world is a madhouse.

there are some opinions that are so repulsive they'd merit it.

this is not one of them, saying Hilter was intelligent and charismatic but evil is just fact. there's no approval of him implicit in saying he had qualities that drew people to him.

again, its the same as saying Donald Trump has those same qualities. he's clever enough to be fooling countless millions of people now--not only in the US but you can look around in the forums here and see a lot of approval of him too. but at the same time, if you see through his act, you'd also have to note that he's evil as well. if he's not Hitler, its only because possibly he may never get the chance to be.

I agree that Aubrey's comments aren't even bad, but HM's with truly bad opinions shouldn't be kicked out either, why not just challenge their opinions rather than silencing them.

it depends.

sometimes open dialog is good.

but sometimes its just something that can be used as exploitation by a cheap crass tv show simply trying to get viewership and not caring a whit about the social worth of what's being said.

put it this way... would you trust the BB producers to give equal time to all parts of an argument? to show reason instead of screaming and yelling?

its not the best environment for it, is what I'm saying.

That ship sailed long ago. This is probably just another one of BB's stitch ups for publicity like Tila and Winston
