I agree, it was contrived purely for shock purposes.
I've no objection to talking about vibrators (as JP he knows

) or anything else here or in the 'real world', but the girl just brought up the topic out of the blue, started trying to gain attention by being as crude as she could for no apparent reason - it seemed to come out of nowhere.
It's like she doesn't know how to make normal conversation amidst grown-up company.

That's different - she obviously knows who James Whale is, what he was sacked for and his political affiliations (UKIP). She may even have read headlines such as "BBC presenter accused of ‘racism’ after live radio jibe" and many of us know Whale loves to talk, so she asked him about his views.
