I'm sorry, but someone has to say it; awful – a pretentious load of toss.

Enjoyed it, apart from Marc Almond.

Agreed!

Jesus. Believe me, I'm a lover of classical music and I can appreciate more atonal, abstract works. But christ, talk about interpretations so up their own arse and removing the FUN and ENJOYMENT from classic hit songs.

I mean they turned Space Oddity into a dirge.

What exactly is it that Marc Almond is supposed to be good at?

The orchestral arrangements were just about the opposite of what Bowie would have wanted.

It was embarrassingly amateur in every respect. Everyone who took part ought to be ashamed.

Hit the spot with me. As much an interpretation of the man as the songs.

Very creative. Bowie would have approved. I actually liked the Space Oddity arrangement.

Bowie would have been appalled. Under more imaginative direction, the orchestral instruments could have been used to create something much darker, imaginative and more powerful. This was just pathetic, cocktail lounge background music. If they were serious about a genuine tribute they should have brought in somebody like Brian Eno to give it a much needed edge. This was just an embarrassment.

i thought it was pretty good and i think bowie in particular would have enjoyed the arrangements, particularly those least like the originals as he appreciated the avant guarde

Really? Told you that himself did he?

He didn't have to. Anybody who's familiar with Bowie ought to have realised that it was all simply far too sonically unadventurous to be worth doing. He probably would have laughed his socks off at Marc Almond though.

I would like to apologise to David Bowie for listening to that travesty of his wonderful music. Sorry BBC, it was shite.

I thought some parts were better than others..."Warszawa', 'Man who Sold the World', 'Lady Grinning Soul', 'Fame' were great. Neil Hannon sounded Bowiesque, Laura Mvula was great as was Anna Calvi. I wasn't so sold on Marc Almond or Paul Buchanan and I could imagine this being done in a whole different way but it was still pretty good.

Agreed. As a Bowie fan since 1972, I checked this out, only to find a bunch of has been and wanna be musicians mutilating the great man's songs. I mean, completely mangling how they're supposed to sound.

Good and bad in there, an interesting performance. At least we were spared the likes of Adele, Kanye, 1 Direction and so on.

Looking at the artists involved, I'm surprised you guys think it was so bad!

Does anyone have a video link please, so I can judge for myself? Got a feeling I will feel different to most of you.

I was enjoying it right up to when the Rapper strolled on... after that, it was downhill all the way.
I hated Calvi (why she tuned her guitar, I'll never know. All she did was slide up and down the neck) & that other gonk playing the bass in the background (why??)
Almond was dreadful on LOM? but better on his other songs.
Neil Hannon should have had more songs, he was great, though looked terrified.

Cale just wrecked everything he sang
"Always crashing" was dreadful too
After All was an odd choice but was OK

IMHO of course

Neil Hannon did at least show that he might have a future as the singer in a late-period Bowie tribute band.
