I am getting rid of my Sky contract boxand thinking of replacing it with a freesat+ box. What are your recommendations?

Humax HB-1000S - It's great with a external hard drive, I've Being using it for a year now.

I wouldn't recommend getting a box with a hard drive built in as hard drives have a short life time.

Where did you get that last item from ? My Foxsat-HDR used daily since 2008 has the same 2TB drive WD AV drive fitted Dec 2008. Hard drives used in pvrs are specially designed for the task.

Reliability

300,000 load/unload cycles used twice a day would last over 200yrs. The drives are warranted for 3 yrs.

I recently bought a Humax 1100S HDR Freesat recording box and really like it (cancelled Sky + HD).

It's pretty slow to boot up but other than that it does a good job.

I coupled it with a Now TV box for catch-up and streaming services so now have all the TV I want at a fraction of what I was paying previously.

Edit - Re. HDD life the Sky 1TB box I've just taken out of service was over 6 years old and the hard drive was problem free.

I did the same . I replaced SKY Box with a Humax 1100S HDR Freesat Box also with a NOW Box with a 5 Month Entertainment Pass.

I also have a Amazon Fire TV Box and I also took a Subscription to Netflix.

Now I get all the TV, Movies and Box Sets that I want and I am saving OVER £60 a month as well.

Win, Win situation.

For a cold boot it is fast, about 30-35 secs depending on when you measure it to.
You old Sky unit in standby was just kidding you that it was in standby and that cost you about an extra £25 p.a. - so you are going to save more than you planned.

A old Sky unit cold boot is at least 2 minutes from memory.
