I've only dipped in and out of corrie for the last couple of years (due to it being crap) in that awful Xmas storyline I remember Tyrone was having some major financial issues and getting into debt.

I've only just realised they seem fine now, was it all brushed under the carpet or did they receive some cash injection that I missed

Tyrone's now working for Steve on the taxi's...
...but I can't see that being enough to get them out of the shit they were in.

Fiz and Ty tightened their belts and dug themselves out of debt.

A few weeks of sugar and lard sarnies, hardly ever going to the pub or cafe, and buying Orp and Roobeh's clothes in the charity shop and they're solvent again. They switched off the heating too and wore layers of rags to keep warm in the house.

It's great to see them scoffing bacon butties in the cafe again, and swilling ale - just shows what you can do if you put your mind to it.

Like everything else that has happened to them, it seems to have been relegated to the Corrie history books for now

I think the writers got as bored with it as we did frankly!!

However let's not forget that Ty single handedly solved all his & the family's problems by collecting a few bits of household scrap from the neighbours & selling it, despite the fact there is no evidence of a scapyard anywhere near Coronation Street, meaning he would have either had to hire a vehicle to transport it or else sell it to a dealer who would have paid him peanuts, given the price of scrap has been pretty much rock bottom for the last year!!
One of Blackburn's more ludicrous desperation plots!!

It is a bit odd how it all just disappeared - the scrap and the storyline, I mean.

It really was tedious, and unbelievable.

Financial problems rarely last long in Soap. Michelle and Steve bounced back really quickly from their money woes, and it barely gets a mention now. Gail didn't seem overly bothered with David and Kylies plans to move to Barbados, even though she lost £40k to Lewis not so doesn't own her house (She even managed to finance a wedding to Les Dennis on her cleaners wage). But the biscuit was well and truly taken by Zainab in EastEnders, who barely a month after wailing as her family were left in financial ruins by her sons business incompetence shelled out £1k for a water feature to impress the neighbours!

It really was unbeleivable. And while we're on the subject do we know if Tye owns that house outright or not, cos I always had the impression he did.

Why do soaps get storylines with money problems so wrong?

Is it because they approach them as a storyline that has a defined 'beginning' and 'end', rather than looking on it as an ongoing issue that could have long-term effects on a character?

In the past, classic Corrie characters like the Ogdens and Duckworths who struggled with money have followed the latter pattern. Not having much money and struggling to get by has been a key feature of their character, not just a plot that gets bolted on whenever the writers fancy. Characters lived within their means and if they did do something outside of what was reasonably expected of them, that became the story. Money problems themselves weren't the story, it was what happened to the characters because of their money problems that got covered.

Today characters can have as much money as a story requires, allowing them to invest in businesses, buy property, fill their homes with tat or buy same-day tickets to Barbados whenever the whim takes them.

As I remember he started selling scrap metal to pay for the £300 (?) taxi drivers licence

This is far too sensible!! And so true. 😉

Oh, for the days of the lovable Oggies and Duckies. Now all we've got are gob-shite, feisty women, weak men and numerous Corrie weirdos, simpletons, and nut jobs.

Yes, strange how no one asked David and Kylie how they planned to pay their mortgage from abroad, and finance somewhere else to live as well. Or was Gail and Sarah planning to pay their mortgage.
Tyrone is a mechanic, yet got a job as a taxi driver, rather than fixing cars in his spare time. But oddly enough didn't even have a clue how to approach fixing the radio in the Cab.
And hasn't Luke moved out of Fiz and Tyrone's house now, so they must be pretty broke. Yet the Garage Tyrone is a partner in, was able to take on another mechanic (Freddie) full-time they had so much work on....

Do the scriptwriters not talk to each other about these storylines or do they not care that we pick up on these issues?

They have a deal with the forum. We don't care about their issues and they don't care about ours. It works well and I like it too.

They've also redecorated the entrance hall:

and upgraded the kitchen

Unfortunately Vera's treasured cocktail bar just had to go

Thankfully, there was one thing they just couldn't bring themselves to part with.....
