Football on 5 - 6 August 2016
George Riley and Lynsey Hipgrave with Michael Gray and Chris Iwelumo in the studio. Nottingham Forest v Burton Albion - Paul Walker Fulham v Newcastle United (Fri) - Daniel Mann & Andy Hinchcliffe Championship roundups: Dave Beckett, Dan O'Hagan, Dan Mason, Faye Carruthers Michael Gray voiced Blackburn v Norwich and Chris Iwelumo voiced Rotherham v Wolves L1 roundups: Dan O'Hagan, Dan Mason, Nick Halling, Jack Woodward, Faye Carruthers, Dave Beckett L2 roundups: Dan Mason, Faye Carruthers, Dan O'Hagan, Jack Woodward, Dave Beckett, Nick Halling Two voices not previously heard on the C5 highlights show among the reporters, Nick Halling (ex voice of the NFL, used to be on the Football League Show in the early days of that programme) and Jack Woodward (ex Aston Villa TV commentator). Faye Carruthers is also more of a Final Score regular but she was heard maybe 2 or 3 times on Football League Tonight last season. This isn't a "overstaffing" moan/rant but just an observation. 6 voiceover people for L1 and L2 is ridiculously unnecessary? 2 or 3 could do it aurely? |

Great to see Neville back. Seems a bit bizarre he won't be doing every MNF considering how highly regarded he is on it and how much he seemed to enjoy doing the show - I can only imagine it's due to the time commitment involved given Neville's other business interests.
Will be interesting to see if Neville is used slightly less overall or if he'll still often be on twice a weekend. I hope they use him more in a studio capacity, particularly if he's not on all MNFs, as I think that's where he was missed most last season and is his best role. I'd hope Neville would still do a high proportion of MNFs and that their guest selection is better this season than it was last. |

Sky Sports News just announced that Gary Nevile is returning - and confirmed Jeff Stelling and Rachel Riley as the new team on Friday Night Football.
Full details: http://www.skysports.com/football/ne...st-ever-season - Guests on FNF will be 'from inside and outside the world of sport'. An indication I think that this will be the 'entertainment' style show. - Niall Quinn is a pundit 'in the studio' for all of the live Sat 3pm games in Ireland. That rules him out of appearing on the Sat 12.30pm games, although the wording suggests to me presentation won't be on-site so he could certainly appear regularly in some capacity on FNF and Super Sunday. |

Beyond Neville being a 'guest pundit' on MNF, a couple of points:

![]() It's a hell of a lot to look at, study, research, write and record with that number of matches. And the pictures aren't necessarily ready to view and edit when you are! They don't ad-lib it, you know!

I've no idea on the precise practicalities but presumably getting scripts researched, written, edited and voiced for the best part of 36 matches in fewer than four hours is a logistical challenge?
Double whammy for you, JBO! ![]() When I did the Football League round-ups on Sunday morning for BT/BBC website, the guys writing the scripts for myself and other presenters to come in to read would be working on them all night! I'm presuming the Channel 5 round up guys do their own, and that's quite a slog! |

Enjoyed Stelling's dig at BT's new show yesterday - hard to consider it as a credible result service when they miss the first weekend of the season.
Great to see Neville back on Sky. Probably worked out well for Sky in the long-run as reading between the lines I think Neville would have taken a management job this season had Valencia not come up. Will be interesting to hear the length of Neville's Sky contract and whether he'll be there for the long-term or not - I guess if there's the prospect of him leaving again over the next year or two that could explain why he's not returned full-time to MNF. I can't really see what new Sky projects there are for him to work on but guess we'll have to see. |

Dont think it has been mentioned on here, but did anybody catch Jeff Stelling, Digging at BT Score yesterday.
If not around 2.30, he came out with well you can go to watch any score programme, but it doesn't start until next week. It shows there importance it was something like that |

Definitely. Hipgrave does a good job filling in the presenting shoes and the format currently seems to work with 2 decent pundits alongside the 2 presenters. Gray and Iwelumo are solid people to have.
Certainly when you compare with this time last year, the difference is huge. In other news, Ryan Giggs joining Ferdinand, Humphrey and co for the Community Shield today. Be interesting to see if he becomes BT's big signing this Summer after Neville's Sky return was announced. Good to see Gary Neville back on Sky - though (while not wanting to get into this debate again) maybe not wise for Sky to make such a song and dance over it given the Euros. Saw some of the 'banter' between Gary and Carragher on Twitter suggesting MNF lost 500k of viewers after he left. That can't be right surely? Even if it's not that much that sounds a pretty big drop - don't quite a few Sky matches get sub 1 million? If so, surprised Sky are still going with this 'guest' format for MNF. I didn't enjoy it much at the end of last season - guests either weren't used to the format or they often they talked about the guest's career a bit at the expense of the weekend's football. If it's returning, I hope they limit it mostly to just Sky pundits and a smaller rotating line-up. Also, while I'll sound a bit of a misery saying this, the whole Sky 'I wonder how I'll wonder how we'll be able to handle them' stuff about Gary and Carragher is irritating me a tad. They're football pundits who agree about an awful lot - the above makes them sound like they're wrestlers about to hit each with a steel chair each show. It just seems a bit forced. |

If so, thank goodness. I thought BT were running low on ex-Manchester United pundits.
Not sure if it's in his contract that he's not doing it all the time though because he has been quite open that while he doesn't mind doing punditry, he can find it a bit boring. |

They look slicker. I hope they get rid of that bloody "together as one" intro for the Premier League seen as it's a new set of rights and everything.
Oh and it's Chris Hollins with Harry Redknapp and Dean Ashton on the Olympic Stadium. Ian Darke on commentary though not sure on co comm yet. EDIT: It is John Hartson as co-comm. I do feel as if I've heard half the nation of Wales commentate on football since the last club season finished. Chris Hollins - has he presented much for BT before? I know it's pre-season so various unusual personnel often appear and not much should be read into it but surprised to see him there. Agreed on that 'Together' music. That said I do hope the Sky League Cup music lives on - it's been around since even before the original Commentators thread existed.

Also slightly off-topic but is there really the need for three presenters on the Fantasy Football Show? Sounds like it'll be Riley, Merson and Rushden - sounds a bit much for an hour-long show. |

Haha, I hope they use Scholes a bit more this season though. Last season I think they used him quite a bit at the start and then you didn't see him for about 3-4 months in the middle of the season and BT were even using really random pundits on United matches.
Not sure if it's in his contract that he's not doing it all the time though because he has been quite open that while he doesn't mind doing punditry, he can find it a bit boring. Oh goodness - Jake Humphrey joined by Michael Owen, Robbie Savage and Rio Ferdinand as pundits for the Community Shield coverage. |

I imagine they'll use Scholes a similar amount to last season. Was surprised he didn't pop up on their CL Final coverage last season - especially as he featured in the adverts.

So long as he's not thrown on virtually every game as he was in the past and he's used more sparsely, I don't mind his appearances on BT too much. |
