Scott Minto is presenting QPR vs Wolves on Sky with David Prutton, Gary Weaver and Don Goodman are commentating. Minto did some BT-style walking around in the build-up, including interviewing Ian Holloway in his office, although the sound quality was diabolical.

SSN could be much cheaper with less journalism and more just showing highlights of events - so might these four departures be indicative of greater savings to come from doing less journalism?”

There already have been cutbacks in sports news albeit its less noticeable due to the flashy studio. SSN does a lot more studio based chat to fill airtime than they did before and if you watch it for any length of time you'll notice its literally talking heads and voicing over pictures, rather than the packaged reports of the past. In addition Sky News sports updates are now literally just promos for SSN and produced by the same team.
Sad for the people who have lost their jobs but Collins I only ever saw wheeled out for internationals so you can see how bosses looking to keep to a budget might have seen him as a luxury.

Thanks for this - completely confirms my suspicions.

I suspect very big savings are in fact being made. We are only hearing about the high profile departures like Collins and Abraham but seems very likely that big savings are being made behind the scenes.

He's been on Setanta for years.

Pearce also used to present a regular Sunday evening phone-in as well for the first two seasons of the Premier League on Sky, back in the days of the five-hour one-game Super Sundays.

Obviously, this depended on his Capital Gold commitments at the time, but was on most Sundays if I remember.

(It's been busy and I'm catching up on old posts)

While I like the two presenter format on SSN that does a bit od a luxury given cutbacks made elsewhere and some only present on-screen for 2 hours a day. Obviously they would be at Sky far longer than they're on-screen (goes without saying) but if Sky are making savings I'm surprised at least some shifts aren't yet one presenter.

I think it's a shame Collins is gone simply because he has been at Sky so long and is better than some of the reporters who remain.

I do think cutbacks too are responsible for some of the changes Sky have madethis season. Does feel in a way like they are cutting back on much of what they offer (losing certain rights like the US Open and cancelling magazine shows) as a result of cutbacks but then trying to hype up more the big events they do still have.

Shifts are usually 3-4 hours. A number of them also present other output. Hayley McQueen on 3pm Ireland games and SNF. David Garrido on La Liga. Kate Abdo boxing etc.

Indeed many shifts are 3-4 hours but I know there are a few left that are still 2 hours. Though as you say some are now used on other Sky Sports channels which does make sense.

Not sure Kate Abdo is still on the UK SSN these days.

Seeing as they had such a great partnership on the pitch maybe the latter will actually speak to Shearer with a friendly tone rather than his usual dismissive one!

i look forward to the day we see Chris Sutton and Roy Keane on the same show at the same time. I can't think of a more surly duo across all sports, let alone just football!

Anyone know who was at Forest tonight?

I think Shearer & Sutton could be quite good on MOTD!
