Was there any need for the BBC to have their own presentation of the draw when they could have just simulcast what BT were showing? Seemed a waste to me.

Well yes as they needed to top and tail the draw as BT were producing the draw but was an opt for them from the live coverage with Matt Smith and co at pitchside.

Same as last year when BT opted into the BBC coverage of the draw last year. As I mentioned earlier clearly it is year about between the rights holder on who 'does' the draw.

Not sure how to be honest.

Because more people voted for him than the other nominees is the basic answer.

Being serious, he probably has more 'name recognition' for those voting in the awards than some of the others nominated and he is still able to produce outstanding commentaries and goal calls.

There are maybe a few more commentaries by him these days than in previous years that I'm not a huge fan of - however on the whole he is still the person I'd want on a big game. Wonderful voice, great wit and a clear enthusiasm for the game and he really can produce a goal call.

Not saying he's necessarily the person I'd have voted for on that list (Murray and McNamara are both brilliant broadcasters and I'd have voted for one of them) but he is a more than worthy winner.

Jamie Carragher won 'Pundit of the Year' from a shortlist of Carragher, Gary Neville, Jermaine Jenas, Danny Higginbotham, Danny Murphy and Gary Lineker.

If we disagree, I'm sure we'll all have some sort of end-of-year awards thing on here like we have in previous years to give our views.

Seriously? is this all based on Sky viewers?

No way is he a better pundit than at least 3 on that list.
Mark.

It might have already been posted (it's sometimes difficult to keep up), but in a fortnight, MOTD2 will be on Monday 19th to show highlights of the Merseyside Derby.

Eh?

With awards, I think we need to think that what appeals to us (commentator fundamentalists if you will) may also not be the opinion of other more casual viewers/fans.

I doubt enough people hear 5Live guys to win awards like that & commentators on terrestrial TV get hammered every tournament on social media (often unfairly).

I am guessing he meant you normally say something like Chas and Dave on MNF?!

How is Lineker classed as a pundit?

Well, if Garth Crooks is

I did watch some MNF on line just now (some sites just put up the studio segments). I could have sworn David was joined by Donald Trump & Mike Pence

Frankly not trending on Twitter can be counted as a success at times.

Indeed at times I do think places like this may differ from casual viewers at times.
Not as hugely as we sometimes think but some presenters/pundits etc. are certainly more adored online than among the general public and vice versa.

James Richardson is always the example I think of - a brilliant presenter but I imagine more beloved online than he would be among the public at large.

Exactly what I meant.

Yep that 'Pundit of the Year' shortlist was a bit bizarre. Think 'Pundit' was used a bit liberally to include Lineker.

If you read the occassional article on broadcasting in the broadsheets, it's normally Lineker, Tyler, Clive etc mentioned. Maybe some 5Live guys mentioned.

James Richardson is great but how many people watch EFS? BT could have given him a bigger gig but they haven't and I'm sure the public would like him but not enough at home watch EFS to warrant a clamour for him to get a bigger gig if that makes sense.

I think many people would struggle to name current commentators bar top 4-5 (Tyler, Motson, Tyldesley, Mowbay etc)

I bet if a Family Fortunes style question of "Name a football commentator still working on UK TV/radio", John Motson would still well be the top answer and a big drop off after that.

That's OK mate, you are allowed 1 mistake per season.

Yep, plenty of lowlifes out there who run false Twitter accounts.

OK, thanks.

Well, I have closed this off on the hub as it has been pending ever since. I've written a note to accompany it, so if anyone knows the following to be factually incorrect, please let me know:

"Despite BT listing him among the commentators at the start of the match, Howard Webb was not utilised during the 90 minutes, at half-time or in the post-match analysis. He did not feature at all until later that evening in the "Premier League Tonight" show."
