'Dreadful analysis by Rio Ferdinand at half time. Seemed to ask 'Where has Lucas Perez been?' - he's been injured Rio.

I'm not expecting pundits to know everything on every player but that is poor research full stop.

Rio's punditry can be variable - sometimes he can be fantastic while other times he can frankly be rather bad (his selfie discussion sticks out).

Robbie Savage STILL crying about a player not being sent off on Sunday in a game that has absolutely no connection to the one he's commentating on tonight.

For a man who loves to talk, Paul Dempsey describing Barcelona's first three goals tonight as 'inevitable', inevitably sounded a bit daft on BT's short highlights.

Wasn't BT best night it sounds like.

Rio had an off night and while I wanted to like Gerrard (and I realise it's still early days of him doing punditry - as he only did a little last season) when I was watching all he seemed to do was state the blindingly obvious and come up with the most generic views possible. He needs to be a bit more bold and draw a bit more on his playing experience. Hopefully that comes with time.

Ian Wright was probably the best of the three.
I do like Wrighty - he always seems so overjoyed to be on TV which makes the punditry much more enjoyable and often brings quieter pundits out their shells a little even if he himself isn't always the best analyst.

Dunne and Sutton sounds a particularly poor line-up too on the other game. Sutton is basically the anti Ian Wright.

Seen a few journalists mentioning on Twitter that Andy Burton is leaving SSN at the end of this month.

IIRC he was once a rising star at Sky and pitchside reporter on quite a few big games for a while.

He was tainted with the Keys/Gray stuff & I think something else happened out of work too & his role diminished over time, not a huge surrpise or loss.

Where has this Chris Sutton overexposure come from? He has been on most days on BBC and BT. Yet he is incredibly dull and doesnt add much, except for making the viewers feel a little more tired. He seems to be on every football program going the moment.

Just noticed that this week's competition entry was my 1,500th post on DS and I joined the forum exactly 10 years ago!

I don't know where those 10 years have gone but here's to the next decade, whatever it brings. Come December 2026 I wonder if we'll still be speculating on the potential successors to Martin Tyler and Clive Tyldesley or discussing Robbie Savage's co-commentary on England's shock Euro 2028 qualification defeat to Lower Saxony?

To be honest I was amazed that sky still kept andy burton on after keys/gray scandal. He was the one who started the conversation and said most of the bad stuff

Congratulations mate.

Always enjoy your posts on here.

Wonder how many presenters ITV will have got through by 2026?

Rather poor for there to be no pundits so far on the Leicester game.. Yes it's a dead rubber but you would still expect them to put some effort into it, there is no proper reporter as well meaning Smith has doubled up as it.

Most of the build-up as well has been pre-recorded with a longer manager interview.

Deadrubber or not - can't believe the coverage of the Leicester game. Presenter/reporter Matt Smith pitchside and the commentary is offtube... For a British side!!!

I hope this isn't the sign of things to come when BTS3 shows a game with neither a british team in it. Last year they did a 45 minute build-up/post-match with still a full presentation so I hope they keep that...

Indeed does seem a bit cheeky of BT. Surely wouldn't cost them much to get say Lynsey Hipgrave and one pundit doing pre-match/half-time etc. from BT Towers.

That said they do seem to have slowly cut back on studio coverage for live games. At the start, the Saturday European games normally had some studio presentation and IIRC the EFS team also covered the 7.30pm game on the Sunday whereas now neither is the case.

Also most of the magazine shows they have had over the years have been quietly got rid of.

That said the Leicester game is a bit of a dead-rubber let's be honest to the vast majority of viewers so it's hardly the end of the world.
I guess the real proof either way will be the 2nd choice CL games in the New Year - even games involving non-European teams last year had a full studio set-up before so will be telling if that's not the case.

Considering the fall in audiences for football on both SKY and BT, and the number of different platforms becoming available I wonder if the price of TV rights (at least in the UK) has gone as far as it can.

Given that the football authorities are paying more and more attention to overseas deals is it really so inconceivable that one of the big players might throw in the towel in the coming years?

Wednesday 7th December - ITV

UEFA Champions League Highlights

Mark Pougatch presented alongside Roy Keane and Lee Dixon

Tottenham Hotspur v CSKA Moskva - Clive Tyldesley, with Gabriel Clarke conducting interviews
FC Porto v Leicester City - Sam Matterface, with Steve Clamp conducting interviews
FC Basel v Arsenal (Tuesday) - Jon Champion
Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund - Joe Speight
Manchester City v Celtic (Tuesday) - David Stowell, with Sheelagh McLaren conducting interviews

Round-ups - Celina Hinchcliffe and Richard Henwood

Mark Pougatch voiced the action from the other games in the British clubs' groups. I'm not sure who ITV's interviewer in Basel was, but they did take some interviews from there. The reporters in Porto and Manchester were from ITV Central and STV respectively.
