Hargreave's has never sounded interested in any game he has commentated on, sorry complete waste of time having him in the commentary box, get him out of there and keep him in the studio where he does come out with decent points and discussions.

Can't see this new guy Brackley making the grade as a commentator either.

MUTV's coverage of WBA v Manchester United had Mandy Henry in the Old Trafford studio with Ron Atkinson and Lou Macari.

On live match (radio) commentary from Old Trafford were Adam Sommerton and Sammy McIlroy.

And reporting live from The Hawthorns before, after and at half-time were Stewart Gardner and Paddy Crerand, who also did the commentary for the delayed full match TV coverage

Agreed, but then again I don't enjoy the co-commentaries of any of the regulars on BT's Premier League games so I don't know who I'd replace him with. Pretty much the same goes for pundits actually. So, unless I could draft in people from outside the chosen few that work on PL matches, I'd opt to have no pre or post match and just go with the world feed.

Saturday 17th December - Channel 5

Football on 5

George Riley and Lynsey Hipgrave presented alongside Chris Iwelumo and Michael Gray

Birmingham City v Brighton & Hove Albion - Gary Weaver and Danny Higginbotham, with Jonathan Oakes conducting interviews (as Sky Sports)
Leeds United v Brentford - Paul Walker
Norwich City v Huddersfield Town (Friday) - Daniel Mann and Andy Hinchcliffe, with David Craig conducting interviews (as Sky Sports)

Championship round-ups - Dan Mason, Nick Halling, Sue Thearle and Jack Woodward
League One and Two round-ups - Jack Woodward, Matt Williams, Sue Thearle, Dan Mason, John Anderson and Nick Halling

Despite there being two of the regular Football on 5 studio pundits being on tonight, we didn't get another pundits talking over the action style voiceovers. Which is never a bad thing.

Sunday Supplement seems to be 9:00-10:30 and 10:30-11:30 today

EDIT: An early Xmas present from C5 to The Difference it seems

Sunday Supplement is absolute car crash stuff this morning. It's basically Gary Neville on trial. Oliver Holt in particular is coming across as a self righteous, self important tit, even more so than normal.

Let me commence "operation catch-up" with the post I was in the process of making when the board stopped accepting new posts...

Neither of them were aware that the game would go straight to penalties if it ended in a draw, which of course it did.

Bodfish said "we're heading for extra-time" prior to and after the full-time whistle. I thought he would realise his mistake during the ad-break but when they came back from it he said it again. It was only when a goalkeeper and penalty taker were making their way towards the goal with the rest of the teams gathering on the half-way line that an awkward silence ensued while he twigged what was happening. Then, finally, came a casual ".... so then, straight to penalties."

Smoothly done

Sunday Supplement to be honest is absolute garbage every week. Probably my least favourite football show on TV. I always give it a wide berth.

It's always an incredibly odd show to watch - the journalists on there always come across as self-righteous and self-important and for little apparent reason. Yet it always feels as if the show is trying to be highbrow - and failing miserably.

Today's line-up too doesn't exactly make me tempted to watch. I'm assuming there's lot of opinion, hot air and little of substance.

I do get the sense that co-commentary is a tough role and viewers probably don't appreciate that enough.

When you put it simply you have to immediately form a firm decision and get it right while also showing personality and excitement (but not too much), not speaking too much (or too little) and without repeating yourself (intentionally or not)- also while at the same time having to ideally provide some tactical insight or analysis.
Miss out any of the above and you'll inevitably get criticised.

Ignoring Sky co-commentators (who are all strong), I think co-commentators as a whole are pretty poor.
Keown and Murphy are BBC's main two and aren't great and Hoddle on ITV is little better than on BT. Lawro and Townsend too used to get plenty of criticism too when they were lead co-commentators.

That just shows how difficult a job it is and makes you realise how good the very best are at it. It's noticeable too that often the better ones have had years and even decades to hone their skills.

Not saying co-commentators shouldn't be criticised (as let's face it we as viewers have to put up with the co-commentator if they're dreadful and I'm as bad as anyone for criticising co-commentators) but at times we maybe don't appreciate it's a bloody difficult role.

Why have Sky curtailed Goals on Sunday to show this garbage? I literally couldn't care less what Gary Neville wants to read in a newspaper.

Started to watch it but gave up as I found it difficult to watch. Agreed about Holt, and I only saw a few minutes.

Holt was on the defensive from the very beginning and reeled off a load of names that meant nothing to me or to Neville, probably.

I will probably watch it all the way through eventually out of interest but I foolishly thought there might actually be some football discussion rather than just Neville versus the media.

Daniel Mann & David Prutton on QPR vs Villa

Scott Minto presenting but not sure who with

I'm sure QPR fans would prefer it if Ian Holloway was a pundit

Most likely they are saving him for tomorrow.

I'm watching the EFL match today so I can tell you that Tim Sherwood is with Minto for the match.

He's done Sunday & Monday before so possible to do both, I always think a 2 game Super Sunday that runs to 7pm works better with 3 studio pundits or at least having Neville in at the start

That's better bwfcol.

If anything you posted it too well!

Thierry's equivalent being 'If I can say that' or trying to sound very profound when saying something obvious (e.g today is a big test for Arsenal).

That said if I was hugely fussed I probably could have looked up myself.

I know the point you're marking though. Easier to criticise bigger name pundits.”

Yes, apologies if that came out different than I meant it. The point I was trying to make is that it would probably only take Michael Owen to have split an infinitive or something for someone on Twitter to call him an idiot, and then everyone else just pile on, a bit like whenever Glenn Hoddle's on the telly and everyone tweets about him with Your Da jokes and all that. As far as I can see, Owen was just Owen.

Ooh, I totally missed that. A very odd way to go out, probably one of the strangest matches he'd ever done, in a virtually deserted stadium with a pitch invasion. In the bit I did see I was quite pleased Gavin and Beagrie weren't being pious about the pitch invasion, Beagrie did constantly say "Of course, we don't condone it" but both were clearly broadly supportive of the aims of it and were quick to point out how peaceful and orderly it all was. Of course, Gavin has already done more live games this season than about the last three seasons put together.

Best bit in this one came at the start when Matt was walking across the pitch, almost got hit by a ball and turned in its direction to jokingly remonstrate with them, only for a ball to come in the other direction and knock the microphone out of his hands, breaking it in half and rendering him completely inaudible until someone handed him another one. Very close to another Martin-Keown-on-ESPN moment there.

Isn't it just. At the start of the programme it rather illustrated the pointlessness of the walking around business, as Kelly pointed to the results on the big screen and then went to walk to the desk, only to realise she was supposed to do the table as well, so awkwardly stood halfway between the two to do it. Very slick.

That's almost certainly what happened - there was certainly no need to remove Hoddle from the commentary box for get him in the studio otherwise as he had no links to either team, so it seems almost certain someone - as you suggest, probably Rio - pulled out at the last minute so they asked Hoddle to be a pundit instead. Pretty sure that'll be the only two man commentary team on a BT Premier League match this season.

I only realised when they were plugging the Boxing Day edition that it'll actually be on air when a Championship match is being played and is live on Sky Sports, so their coverage of Newcastle vs Sheffield Wednesday might be very odd. I'm assuming that might require the ever-unpopular pundits-talking-over-the-goals approach. That said, it won't be the first time C5 will have done a highlights show when the thing they're showing highlights of is still happening, they've started test match highlights when the test match has still been going on before.

And on New Year's Eve, it will go up against Match of the Day for a half an hour. Good luck with that.

That seemed pretty bizarre, an almost instant repeat. I'm not entirely sure a Sky pundit appearing on a Sky programme is such big news, to be honest. I can't bear Sunday Supplement either, presumably Sky keep it going to curry favour with the press, and also allow them to air critical comment without jeapordising future rights deals.

The picture of Neville they used in the rolling promo in the build-up to Palace vs Chelsea yesterday was also the least flattering picture of Neville I have ever seen, made him look like Les Dawson.

Well, imagine how I feel. I don't wish to bore you with my fancy London ways but the other night I was in a pub in Central London and during the course of the evening, a friend and I realised the party next to us was from a well-known football broadcaster, and said party included three of their commentators, enjoying pre-Christmas drinks.

Anyway, one of the commentators was very chatty and friendly (ie, a bit drunk) and at one point struck up conversation with us about his drunk mate, so we couldn't resist the opportunity to say we knew who they were, which led to a long conversation with the commentator, and an introduction to his colleagues, all of whom were very nice indeed. A great moment. If you follow me on Twitter you'll know who they were, I won't namedrop here, but you'll have heard of them. I notice they've all been on air this weekend, bright and breezy as ever.

Clearly I was at such a loose end with the Commentators Thread being down, I actually had to go and seek out commentators. I didn't tell them about this thread, by the way. They'd suffered enough running into a sad fanboy like me.

Just caught up with Sunday Supplement. It started as them putting Neville on trial and just defending themselves but Neville soon had them almost on side. He made some really good and well-executed points which the journos didn't exactly defend/answer. It's blatantly clear that our journalists don't actually seem to understand football as well as they seem to think they do. Also, they seem to think their opinion is more important than others.
