Seeing as Radio 5 Live's new season plans have been discussed over the page, there has been a couple of significant changes to talkSPORT's Premier League commentary line-up that are probably worth mentioning here.
Last night it was announced that Jim Proudfoot is going to become the station's lead commentator on their Sunday afternoon games, primarily Premier League matches kicking off at 1.30pm - taking over from Sam Matterface. The timing of this move makes sense, given that we're at the beginning of a new Premier League rights cycle and Proudfoot returned to talkSPORT (after a four-year spell with Absolute Radio) one season into the previous deal. Matterface will retain his position as the station's commentator on talkSPORT's Saturday 5.30pm Premier League live games, but there should now be a much more even split of the station's commentary matches between the two.
I imagine Proudfoot's expanded workload on talkSPORT will not affect his work on the Premier League's TV international feed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he regularly commentates on standalone Saturday afternoon games, kicking off at either 12.45pm or 5.30pm, but doesn't tend to cover Sunday matches for them - so this move should not interfere with his TV work.
The other change to talkSPORT's commentary roster is that their regular Premier League co-commentator for the past six seasons, Stan Collymore, left the station abruptly towards the end of Euro 2016. Stan's permanent successor(s) either as co-commentator or on their post-match phone-ins has yet to be announced, and it looks likely that at least initially a rolling pool of different pundits will replace him. This weekend, it'll be Matterface and Stuart Pearce commentating on Manchester City v Sunderland on Saturday and Proudfoot and Danny Higginbotham calling Bournemouth v Manchester United on Sunday, with the co-commentators set to co-host the phone-ins on the respective matchdays.
Recently-launched sister station talkSPORT 2 has taken over from Absolute Radio as the place broadcasting second pick Saturday 3pm Premier League games - Middlesbrough v Stoke City is their first live game in this slot tomorrow. Chris Cooper and Michael Gray will commentate on that one, although given their geographical locations I suspect that the commentary teams on these matches may vary from week to week and will often be people based in and around the places staging each selected fixture.
