O/T but interesting that after doing the first week or so of the football world feed, Keating Keatings is doing the OBS boxing commentary!

"England win the 66 World Cup, let's get a word with the manager, pretty good stuff eh, Rammers?"”

It's been mentioned before but for some reason it doesn't grate as much on the cricket despite happening nearly as often - Bumble, Blowers, Mikey (Holding), Beefy, Nass, Athers, Warney, Wardy etc.

I don't know why but it feels much more forced on the football side or maybe because the pundits are stronger on cricket, they're more able to 'get away' with it.

And of course one of the main presenters of the Olympics is commonly referred to as 'Chappers'.

I'm almost used to 'Fletch' at this point- the one that made me laugh was Jake asking 'Ry' a question on Saturday.

Didn't Peter mention he's due to do some modern pentathlon commentary too at some point?

The Olympics have done his career prospects no harm at all - if only he wasn't so "shouty" at times on football he could go to a whole new level.

Has he not done it?
He told me he had go straight from the boxing to commentating on the modern pentathlon without even knowing what had happened earlier!

Must admit the modern pentathlon has rather passed me by this past couple of weeks, along sadly with a few other sports( you can't watch everything!), although I do recall once doing an interview with a modern pentathlete back in my BBC Radio days!

I would agree on the cricket nicknames, it just seems to fit somehow, but on football, for me, it gives the impression it's a bunch of guys down the pub chatting together about the match.
There's a bit too much "familiarity" for me among some TV presenters and commentators, most of whom are far from being household names.

John Motson had to earn the right to be a "national treasure" known affectionately as Motty......with all due respect, I think the current breed of commentators and pundits have a little way to go yet before they can deservedly attract that kind of affection!

People in the business call me Brackers, but I don't think Ray Wilkins, Joe Jordan, Ron Atkinson or Don Howe ever did in a live commentary.

Although Ray did certainly call me " a very unpleasant young man" on more than one occasion!

So "Fletch", "Sav", " Macca" and the rest of the pet names are not for me, but then I'm from a different generation....some even think a different planet!

Jon Champion will be commentating on Leicester-Arsenal and West Ham-Bournemouth for NBC (and world feed?).

Peter Drury and Phil Neville will do Man Utd vs. Southampton on Friday night.

I get the feeling BT might use Ferdinand slightly less on their CL coverage this season. I mean he covered every first choice match on every CL night from the play-offs until the final and I half expected him to be on this one.
I do think though this might be because they want to use him as a regular on their PL coverage now (rather than just for the heavyweight clashes) and don't want to overexpose their star pundit.”

I don't follow City or United myself, but am aware of a huge backlash against BT's coverage of City in the CL last season. This, despite the head of live football on BT actually being a City fan. City fans hated Ferdinand & Scholes being used as pundits on their games or making comments about City's progress on other CL nights, and being perceived as not being impartial or fair enroute to the semi finals.City fans have always accepted Neville & Carragher's punditry & analysis of City on Sky. The head of BT Sport, Simon Green became involved, and there was an orchestrated campaign amongst City fans to cancel their BT Sport subs. I suspect that this may have had some influence on Given & Dunne being used as pundits last night. It will be interesting to see what happens if City progress far in the CL again this season.

That's all a bit precious surely?
You don't see Man Utd fans orchestrating a campaign against sky when they put Souness, Carragher & Redknapp on Man Utd games.

Ferdinand is a top class analyst and possibly the best on either channel.

I happened to tune in to some of the Olympic boxing on the BBC Red Button on Friday and noticed that Kevin Keatings (so good you surnamed him twice! ) was doing the commentary pretty much straight away. I guess he's covering both events for the duration of the Games.

Wednesday 17th August - BT Sport 2

Live UEFA Champions League: Celtic v Hapoel Beer Sheva

Gary Lineker presenting from Celtic Park alongside Gordon Strachan and John Hartson

Commentators: Derek Rae and Chris Sutton

BT Sport 3

UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round First Leg
Dundalk v Legia Warszawa - Jon Champion and Jim Beglin

BT Sport//ESPN

UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round First Leg
FC Porto v AS Roma - Guy Mowbray and Trevor Francis

BT Sport Extra

UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round First Leg
Villarreal CF v AS Monaco (X2) - Jonathan Pearce and Clive Allen
PFC Ludogorets Razgrad v FK Viktoria Plzen (X3) - Dave Farrar and Nigel Spackman

Bit of a shame that it's just a commentary-only job for the Dundalk game on BT Sport 3. It would have been nice if it had had some studio presentation at least.

Indeed all of last night's pundits I think have played for Manchester City. Given did start appearing later on last season on MC's CL games.

I can understand City fans being annoyed at Scholes being used given he does seem to have a strong dislike for certain clubs but can't understand the Ferdinand one. He's never across to me as overly biased against MC.

Though to be fair in Ray's eyes practically anybody counts as a 'young man'.

Also it's happened plenty of times now but I still find it slightly odd Jonathan Pearce and Guy Mowbray doing relatively minor games on BT.

Dunno if it is just me but as a pundit you should have done some homework?!

Slightly off-topic but this reminds me of Murray-Del Potro in the Olympic tennis final on Sunday where the co-commentator (Paul Hand?) openly admitted he hadn't seen Murray's semi-final in full. Not exactly something I'd put out there when you're supposed to be providing insight into the biggest match of the entire event!

Reminds me of that infamous occassion where Dixon was treated like a class swot for actually daring to know one of the players in a NZ/Slovakia World Cup match.

Apres Match on RTE sent up that era of MOTD perfectly.

In that case thought I wouldn't go to crazy mad as Hand probably was covering table tennis or Badminton (him and Simon Reed have been crossing between those sports comms wise)

Fair enough - I have noticed Reed on multiple sports but wasn't aware Hand had been across several too.

I'll just add my praise for Brotherton's work on the Olympic cycling - he's done a great job of succeeding Hugh 'Chris Hoy is igniting the burners!' Porter. And while I'm at it Chris Boardman has been as insightful as ever and Hoy has settled into the punditry role really smoothly. Top stuff from the BBC.
