Have to sat awful commentary so far. 100mph is almost a cliche with Fletcher but really has been the case today. Feels like he, Savage and Hoddle haven't stopped talking for 45 mins. And of course there are the customary Fletches. Savage back to normal too after the Euros.
A shame as Fletcher had been alright this season thus far until today. Not that I'm doubting Charles Sale at all (perish the thought) but if Fletcher and Savage really did stop talking to each other, they're become awfully pally again very quickly. BT really do need to dump this 3-man commentary team format as it is. The amount of cringeworthy and busy commentaries it produces outweigh the good ones. |

Darren Fletcher is a good commentator at best but has shown very little if any improvement since day one on BT and that is no exaggeration and your right the commentary at times between the 3 of then is very very poor. I used the word cringeworthy last nght and have to say its justified again tonight. |

Whereas when the co-commentator is slightly calmer or it's a 2-person team Fletcher seems to slow down and commentate much better. Today was not BT's best effort at all. Seems odd as well given the game was fairly big on paper to have most of their weaker pundits and personnel rather than their stronger ones. Have to say PL Live coverage earlier today much better than the awful PL coverage either side of it for me. |

Kammy was a bit lively but was fine. Geoff looked a bit uncomfy saying welcome back at 7pm with the teams but no problem. Quite liked how all the team effectively linked after a break. Even at Half Time - Tyler welcomed as back straight off the back of it (wasn't handed over). If every 18-30 year old age bracket poster here disagrees though then I'll shut up! ![]() Quote:

As someone also in the 18-30 market i have to disagree on this one. I find the whole Soccer AM thing a bit too childish. Back when i was around 14/15 i quite enjoyed watching Soccer AM, if anything it was one of my favourite shows on TV. But having watched it yet again the other day it just seems to childish. Whether im acting far beyond my years or not it just isnt my cup of tea. Football coverage does need some humour in it but for me it shouldnt be the centrepiece of the coverage as it seemed last night and on Soccer AM. Gary Lineker seems to get actually get the perfect balance, he makes a joke but gets to the serious bits very well. Where as you feel that Soccer AM just couldn't do serious. Sorry pakokelso
![]() Not forgetting James Richardson and the EFS team either. Off-topic but the Balding Chappers partnership at the Olympics has been inspired. They seem to get on well and bring out the best in each other. Also spare a thought for the 31 year olds. They must feel left out with all this 18-30 talk.

![]() In my earlier comments on FNF etc. The feeling is Sky have been superb, but outwith MNF for me the polished pro look is great for likes of us here and for many but might ailenate some. BT is trying to be alternate, different vibe but absoloutely bomb it. Their UCL is Sky-lite and it works. Their Scottish coverage on the whole is superb. Their PL coverage is so poor with Jake, Fletch and Sav to start with and try too hard. It's good chat. Been a wee while since the thread has had something to get their teeth into.

I didn't catch all of FNF last night seen from about seven onward. I am also in the 18-30 bracket (and this is starting to sound like some of alcoholic anonymous sketch BTW
) and generally quite liked what I seen. I think they gauged the mood of a Friday night quite well. A lot of people are tired, they just want to put there feet up and relax without having to watch anything to heavy or overbearing. It was also nice to see something a bit fresh and different to the norm. As much as I love MNF, I wouldn't want that style of show on a Friday, it would just feel to repetitive and serious. Likewise, I wouldn't simply want a presenter and probably some of the B list pundits at the ground for bog standard presentation, FNF is after all new and deserves its own distinctive feel, given the amount of discussion its received, I think it's fair to say they achieve this.In personnel terms, I think Rachel is a good acquisition. She has a good fanbase and I imagine will be popular but she also clearly knows her stuff and where she did ask questions they were relevant and not just bog standard. It would be nice maybe if she did have the opportunity to do as much as Jeff though. For example, I would probably structure it more so that say before an interview post-match Jeff discusses one particular thing with the pundits (say how good the new signings for Man Utd were) and then post-interview Rachel discusses the challenges going for them. I don't think there's anything wrong with the actual use of dual presentation, as long as both of them have something to do, yes they cold have one presenter but its a stylistic thing and I actually quite like and again its something different. Jeff was fine, don't really get the criticism to be fair. Not sure where I stand on the use of four pundits, my immediate reaction was that it was far to many. That said, it didn't really make the quality of punditry suffer that much as it normally may do. I thought Jamie Redknapp was very well suited to this type of format and have always said he works better as part of a larger panel, he can actually interact better with the other pundits and his contributions are a bit better when he has others to feed off and he's not doing all of the analysis. Ryan Giggs suited the role and brought a lot to the coverage, I very much hope on occasions where they usually consider using Dwight Yorke on a Match, they manage to use him instead. Henry was good, seems to have revived himself recently. Cara also adapted to the format well and I think all 3 of the sky regulars seemed relaxed and comfortable with it. The use of Kammy I thought was great, light-hearted but not overly stupid and helped give the programme some identity. Going forward though, with such a long build up I would be tempted to incorporate some build up to the weekends other games in that time. Been with one eye watching the Game of the Day now and unlike Liverpool's performance, Jamie has actually been quite good in his new role. He's made his points well, his keen observations we see in his punditry have transferred into this more instant role and he's built a good rapport up with Tyler. It'd be nice to here him on some of the live games here and maybe have one of the more regular co-comms in the studio sometime. |

Nice touch at the end of MOTD, little tribute to Dalian Atkinson showing his goal of the season from 1992/93 complete with Clive Tlydesley's commentary.

Coverage is like that of a low key fixture, no hyperbole or faff involved. Everything is pretty much as it is with the rest of their coverage. Same graphics, sponsors and err commentators. I wonder if they are going to rotate their commentators on these games. It'd be great to hear Tyler or Parry do an odd one.

I don't particuarly watch Soccer AM much. Haven't in last few years. I wasn't huge fan of Lovejoy but liked Goldstein (particuarly on the old Friday night allsports show he did with Helen). Big issue was Fenners etc left. I usually gravitate / have it on in the background if I'm around on a Sat morning but not because it is top drawer tv. You see how it trends though etc - clearly still has a role to play.

Been a wee while since the thread has had something to get their teeth into. ![]() In my view, they already have most of the talent there to produce strong coverage -Jake aside I really like their presenters, their commentators are great too (I know Fletcher divides opinion on here but when paired with someone competent he can be good too) and certainly some of their pundits are strong. And as you say on many competitions they've shown that they're capable of good coverage. But then they produce coverage like today with as poor a line-up as today and you honestly wonder what they're doing. I have no idea why they still persist with that 3 person commentary team idea in its current format - they don't use it on European football, FA Cup, CL or EL so clearly don't rate it that much. It's odd they haven't tried to fix some of the major issues with their PL coverage - the issues are beyond obvious (I think most of us could name exactly the same weaknesses) and the solutions or at least improvements are actually relatively obvious. As long as Yorke is only left to the 'if we have to' picks then I'm happy. One thing that seems to have escaped mention was Phil Neville as a pundit tonight on MOTD alongside Danny Murphy. We've also had the unusual occurrence of a commentator doing two games in a row on MOTD on one show - Steve Wilson commentating first on Leicester/Arsenal and then immediately after on the Friday game. That's brilliant. Quite bombastic but it works. Though I could imagine those titles and in particular that music being a bit much for say Blackburn/Aston Villa. ![]() Also more yoof chat with the Judge Jules version of the mid-2000s PL theme!

Saturday 20th August - Channel 5
Football on 5 George Riley and Lynsey Hipgrave presented alongside Adam Virgo and Glenn Murray Birmingham City v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Paul Walker Derby County v Aston Villa - Daniel Mann and Don Goodman, with Jonathan Oakes conducting interviews (as Sky Sports) Championship round-ups - Tom Skippings, Sue Thearle and Alex Gordon-Martin League One and Two round-ups - Matt Williams, Tom Skippings, Sue Thearle, Nick Halling, John Anderson and Alex Gordon-Martin Adam Virgo voiced the action from Bristol City v Newcastle United. Given how I moaned on here plenty of times last season that, since switching to their new catch-up player, Channel 5 were really slow to upload Football League Tonight to My5, it's only right I compliment them in getting both parts of last night's Football on 5 up by first thing this morning. Nice to see that this has improved. |
