I am lost here. Simon Brotherton and ? are commentating on FS2 in the United States and I assume that is the World Feed.
Bill Leslie is the sole commentator on Malta v Scotland for Fox Soccer Plus. |

World Cup 2018 Qualifier - Slovakia v England (ITV):
Mark Pougatch presenting from the City Arena (Stadion Antona Malatinskeho) in Trvana with Ian Wright and Lee Dixon. Gabriel Clarke reporting. Commentators - Clive Tyldesley and Glenn Hoddle A very lively Martin Tyler and Alan Smith were also there, doing the Sky Sports commentary. DId I imagine it, or were the Sky highlights of the game (World Feed pictures?) shot from the opposite side of the ground to that shown on ITV? I finished watching the game, flicked over to the Scotland game on Sky and England were shooting the opposite way! |

I think the commentator with Simon Brotherton covering Norway v Germany for the World Feed is Don Hutchinson. Edit -> the co-commentator is Don Goodman. Busy man today. |

Why do Sky Sports think it's OK to interview managers of smaller clubs in the dugout during the match? I find it disrespectful, as if these games are of no consequence. David Craig interviewed one of the manager's during a League 1 game earlier. It reminded me that they did the same to "little old" Burton Albion in the Championship a couple of weeks ago. If I was the manager I'd tell them to sod off, there's a game going on here. Quote:
BT is it's own standalone channel.
Sky have implemented differently and the UHD feed is accessible via the Red Button or EPG menu. The channel dog states Sky Sports 1 Live in Ultra HD, it isn't branded Sky Sports UHD. |

I hate to bring it up again but really Clive should be more balanced on England matches!

I think that it is perfectly reasonable for commentators to be partial when it is a British side versus a non-British side on British tv.

Do you really think Tyldesley will be neutral in the Scotland v England games?

I did write British versus non-British sides. I would imagine that STV would supply its own commentator for the ITV match so CT would be perfectly entitled to be partial.

But then technically STV shouldn't have to. Shouldn't the network output cater to the whole country?

Our commentators are incredibly impartial compared to many other countries.

I would have to say football is by far the worst for impartiality on sports. Some commentators are bad in other sports, Andrew Castle in particular springs to mind, but the majority are not. |

I don't think it is reasonable to remain impartial because of the possibility of some opposition fans watching or listening. We are a multi-cultural society (and the better for that) but it would be stretching things to observe neutrality on England v anybody matches. If CT and company had been strictly neutral during England v Iceland in Euro 2016, I think I would not have been pleased if I ware an England supporter.

I know it's discussed after every England game, and often I don't have a problem with it, but I did think Tyldesley was particularly poor today. He seemed to be desperately pleading, even snide at times, like that annoying man who sits behind you at matches and just constantly appeals for everything - 'surely that was a push? Surely?! No maybe not' and 'any chance of a yellow card here referee'.
After the next World Cup he'll have been number 1 for 20 years and in his mid 60s. I really think that might be the time to promote someone like Jon Champion. And I know it's been said a lot but Glenn Hoddle is perfectly good in the studio but really not suited to co-commentary. I did like the bit when Dixon and Wright laughed when they realised how wrong their analysis of the offside decision was, |

Commentators should be aware that there is a possibility that there could be some opposition fans listening as well as impartial football fans as well. Impartiality should be expected from commentators

Notts County/Grimsby as the featured game, how did they decide that?!

It goes back to one of the things I dislike about Football on 5, you just see the goals which is alright if it's your team, but if it isn't, who cares? You're playing to hardcore fans and nobody else. Whereas if you had a feature or two like you used to have on the Beeb and ITV, you do at least get to know why it matters. If you're on television the whole point is to promote the league and the sport to a wider audience. Broadcasters are not charities, they buy the rights to get an audience. There are plenty of lulls in these games anyway. My dad doesn't watch much football on TV as he doesn't have Sky or BT but when he came round to my house last season he watched a Wrexham match on BT and as a Wrexham fan found the coverage very interesting, because of all the access all areas business. This is must be a long time since George Gavin was doing EFL games.

Torquay v Lincoln- Matt Smith and Natalie Quirk there for BT. Steve Bower and Adam Virgo commentate.
I don't know who the pundits were, I've been at my parents' all weekend. If nobody else posts them before I get back and check my recording, I'll post them then. I notice ITV were promoting highlights of Scotland and "some action" from Northern Ireland on their highlights show tonight. |

Thanks very much. I assume we'd be hearing on here if similar happened with Fletch and co.. ![]() On a similar note, I didn't realise until recently how similar Austin Healey sounds to Michael Owen (albeit I far prefer Austin). |

Well, this is not unique to Sky, because of course BT do it during the Conference, and I for one am all for it. The fact is that for the vast majority of the audience these matches require the context otherwise they're two teams you don't know and the only audience you get is those who are happy to watch any balls being kicked regardless of who's kicking them. So you have to make it easier for the audience to understand who's involved and what's at stake. And it's a good advert for the competition and the teams.

I did like the bit when Dixon and Wright laughed when they realised how wrong their analysis of the offside decision was, Didn't see too much of the England game (sounds like I had a lucky escape apparently) so can't say too much about today's commentary but I have to say at times Clive does get dangerously close to cheerleading for sides - Liverpool/Basel a few years leaps out. Of course we're not all expecting him to be totally down-the-line neutral (and often brilliant goal calls do come from commentators being slightly partisan) but at the same time if there are neutral viewers commentaries shouldn't be partisan enough to annoy them. I think most of use do allow some leeway too - let's not forget Joe Speight & Iain Dowie on N Ireland/Ukraine probably got the most praise of any Euro 2016 commentary. |
