Yes, it's in the Radio Times as well, which also confirms that Steve Wilson and Danny Murphy are commentating.

.... I do think if Sky can get him back then they should. Ultimatley MNF was not as good without him ..... I do think though he has lost some credability. ...... "Football: Gray shocks Everton by rejecting job" http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/f...b-1257731.html |

Confirmation of Kelly Cates at Sky, looks like Minto will host Friday and Sunday matches whilst Cates will host the Saturday evening clashes. |

It'a just as likely that people question the credibility of a pundit that hasn't tried and failed, in my opinion. It's worth remembering that Andy Gray- although having a brief spell as Assistant Manager at Aston Villa in the early nineties- was offered the managerial job at Everton in 1997 and declined it, apparently saying that to "take the job and then let the supporters down would have been too much to bear". He subsequently stayed at Sky and continud to be regarded by many as the best pundit around.
Quote:
I always found the punditry stuff a bit odd on Match Choice. You select one game to watch for 60 mins or so then you get this 15-20 mins chat on all the games, which is okay for MOTD or Goals on Sunday when you see highlights edits of all the games but different when you watch one for a big lengthy edit.
That issue is always the problem with Match Choice, though, in that I think the number of people who want to see their own team's match and absolutely nothing else is very small indeed. I remember when it started people like Paul Fox in the papers saying it was the death knell for Match of the Day, but in the end it has no impact, really, because they appeal to different audiences. As for Manish, very good move by PLP, Ive said in the past in this thread I think hes one of the most talented presenters out there and is criminally underused by the BBC. He deserves a lead anchor job, I remember thinking before Jake Humphery was announced he would be good for BT. Its also nice to hear he will be used for the first couple of weeks of the new season, I think Im right in saying he has not done MOTD2 before? He has if i recall done the main show a couple of times and I look forward to see him present a couple of important shows.
Well done to Manish, it's a bit like Jon Champion in a way - you can say it's a shame they're not on a major UK broadcaster anymore but they're doing big games for a huge audience, much bigger than they would have got had they been number two at the Beeb or ITV. |

That 'Wazza' testimonial now 'upgraded' to be on BT Showcase, where the loop will now give you more teasers to the BT Score show.

I think 'luck of the draw' is a little off the mark as many of the same pundits popped up throughout the season. You can add Curbishley, Hargreaves, Dixon, Petit, Wilkins, Owen to name but a few to a list of pundits that appeared regularly last season.
I was aware that Manish was handed an increased role by PLP at the end of last season when he announced at the end of his last 'Premier League News'. However he did fill John Dykes main presenter's chair near the end of last season when Dykes and Hutchison were commentating on a Saturday 3:00 match (at Newcastle I think). I wouldn't be surprised if that was a trial run, and that beginning this season, PLP will be using Dykes/Hutchison commentary on the main 3:00 Saturday match each week, replacing the regular 'Sky' voices of Weaver/Jones/Taphouse, etc. I am hoping Pougach continues his MNF role for PLP as well as Monday's edition of 'Football Today' alongside Don & Dion. I associate Curbishley at this point with shows like Sky Sports Now/Morning View - which are a slight out-of-body experience when I stumble upon it. They seem to spend a vast chunk of 2 hours even by SSN standards with Rob Wotton talking to the likes of Tony Gale/Alan Curbishley/ Gerry Francis/Nigel Winterburn etc. It all just seems a bit pointless. Surely a normal SSN bulletin would be cheaper and more productive. I live in the UK so obviously haven't seen too much of the PLP coverage - however the reason for the 'luck of the draw' comment is that my understanding from here is that bar Townsend and Hutchinson it does seem to be slightly random who appears and some panels may be better than others and that there wouldn't be many 'regulars' as such but instead it'd be more who's available. That said apologies if I'm totally wrong. I remember reading that for one fairly big match last season the PLP line-up involved Wright and Owen with Townsend on commentary whereas another time it was Petit, Jenas and Townsend in the studio. Quote:
I was looking to see who did MOTD2 when Adrian Chiles was at the Olympics in 2008, but it was Ray Stubbs. I remember Gary Lineker doing MOTD2 a few times and making a bit of a hash of 2 Good 2 Bad.
Well done to Manish, it's a bit like Jon Champion in a way - you can say it's a shame they're not on a major UK broadcaster anymore but they're doing big games for a huge audience, much bigger than they would have got had they been number two at the Beeb or ITV. Quote:
That said, memories can be short and it could of course all be forgotten about pretty quickly. One poster mentioned him being more accomplished as a player than his other pundits it would be interesting to see a breakdowm of their honours, pressumbly only Souness could have perhaps exceeded him.
Its also interesting that Carragher is going to have a go at commentary. If this becomes a regular thing it may suggest Neville may not be as promient this time round, perhaps Sky are weary of him wondering off again? ........ On the other news coming out, I think Matt Smith is an excellent capture for the National League coverage he is one of the best presenters around and certainly the most knowledgable, I hope he still continues to be seen on some UCL/EL games too. For example whatever anyone's opinion on the BT pundits most definetely pass the 'show us your medals' test. Carragher appearing on co-commentary just seems a bit odd to me - especially since Sky already have Quinn, Smith, Provan and Hinchcliffe in that position. Add in Neville possibly returning too and it suggests one of the current co-commentators may lose out - even with the extra 10 games. It'd be a bit of a kick in the teeth for Alan Smith were he again to have someone overtake him in the co-commentary ranks and I feel it'd also be harsh on Andy Hinchcliffe if his PL appearances were reduced to fit in Carragher on commentary. Have to say on BT that they really do have a good line-up of presenters. Lineker, Hipgrave, Richardson and Smith is a very strong line-up. The issue for me is Jake Humphrey - who is very prominent on some of the coverage and doesn't offer as much in my view as the four mentioned (never mind the 'That's the way we do things on BT Sport' stuff) |

Trying to look through all the posts on the latest hot topics for you all ( it's a long read! )......can't ( or won't! ) add much in terms of what's correct and what isn't, but I believe you are right that Gary Neville will be back on Sky and can confirm that Alan Parry will again be on PL commentary duty( curiously, some of you seemed to be doubting this?)Can't really see the point some are making about Neville's credibility being affected by his very brief foray into management, or that he is now somehow permanently branded as a "failed" former manager! ![]() He's only had one stab at it as numeral uno, and it was hardly going to be a walk in the park at Valencia! How many main "pundits" are regarded as totally successful managers? Souness, Carragher, Hansen, Lawrenson, Hoddle, Townsend, Gray, Beglin, Smith, Provan, Dixon, Wright?........there's an endless list of ex-players, who have been, or still are, rated for their commentary or studio work, can't think of too many, though, with a flawless managerial career of any length ( even Brian Clough and Big Ron didn't have that) and most of them have never even BEEN a manager! Neville, as an articulate, intelligent former top player, is wanted for his knowledge and his ability to do the job Sky want him to do. Which he was doing extremely well. Whether they might be wary of him suddenly deciding he'd like another go at managing is another matter. Had lunch with Darkie yesterday and you'll be pleased to know he confirmed he is on the first BT rota of the new season. A few bits of gossip emerged that I won't be putting on the forum, ![]() and lots of banter between us, of course, with fellow diner Garry Richardson. Just heard, too, from Kevin Keatings at the Olympics, not an easy gig for him by the sound of it..............covering endless boxing, football and, yes, the modern pentathlon! ![]() Don't envy him that one - mind you, I had to do water polo at the 1988 Olympics, and I can't even swim!!

And the picture shows Andy Hinchcliffe too as part of the team. An indication he's not doing the PL games this season and/or Gary Neville is returning to his role.
Simon Thomas is listed in that picture as he is doing Lg Cup... But he is doing PL too. |

It seems to be that when the Olympics are concerned to drag a commentator from their established sport and to put them on another sport. Just look at Jonathan Agnew being put on as the equestrian commentator for this games! It seems to me as if they say x is a commentator, lets put them on this sport as we don't know who to put on it. Of course Peter im sure your a big expert on the Water Polo. Who is your tip for Gold?

Well, to be honset, I would look no further than Serbia for the mens title and expect the US will take some beating in the womens event. ![]() My opinion is based entirely though, of course, on the tide being out on Rio's Copacabana beach when they kick off, and that there are no passing motor-boats to disrupt their passing flow. Or do they stage the water polo indoors nowadays? ![]()

Seems like a very sensible way to cover the niche sports to me. |
