Im pretty sure if this was last season Rae would of got the game but as Fletcher is getting ALL the big games it really was no surprise
I'm not so sure.

I think on both BT and Sky, English clubs (or England) trump Scottish clubs (or Scotland). So a match with English involvement will almost certainly have one of their "English" commentators assigned. So last year it would have been a toss-up between Fletcher and Darke, with Rae out of the equation.

We saw it on Sky last season when Tyler covered the Scotland v England friendly (and I expect we'll see the same in the Hampden qualifier next year).

Co-commentators are different, of course. I expect a 3-man team on Wednesday that includes Chris Sutton.

Just watching MOTD. Martin Keown really is the epitomy of these "Einsteins" that Mourinho has been banging on about recently.

Decent showing from BT today despite the obvious flaws. Rio is the man for the big occasion and I particularly enjoyed the video montage and passionate thoughts of Ian Wright. Also a nice little move to bring in Zola as a guest. He's a likable guy who we don't hear of very often on UK coverage and he added to some decent discussion.

Agree with thoughts on commentary sadly. I'm used to Fletcher now as the main commentator but the 3 man commentary was dodgy again. McManaman is better in a 2 and Hoddle shouldn't be a commentator. Jake is Jake. Once again frustrates me on PL Tonight because he's just not witty enough to convey the more light hearted 'banterous' tone that the show is supposed to be about.

Just watching the BT Sport Scraps...I mean Score, and my goodness Jenas apart I hope this is where the rest of the personnel stay from now on. Arry Redknapp looks like he's slipping into a coma, David James is potentially the biggest talker of crap of any paid pundit, Savage is Savage and Paul Ince is personality-less. Sutton is passable as I quite like his cocky, no nonsense approach. I do think it is quite amusing television, if embarrassing on BT's part.
How long has it taken you to realise this?

This is one of BT's few decisions they got right in their time, dropping James from their main football coverage, totally awful pundit.

Only a passing comment, and it might be baloney, but I thought Motson's commentary on the Bournemouth-Everton game felt, well, classic Motson. In the last few years we've all heard him produce a few poor, rambling commentaries, but it felt like there was more zip, more emotion in him on yesterday's game. Did quite enjoy hearing it.

Probably suited him well - one of the smaller Premier league sides beating a team in form at the top of the table giving him more excitement/interest than a bland Premier league game?

On another note Derek Rae has tweeted he is covering Arsenal on Wed's as well as Real Madrid on Tues in the Champion's League.
With Derek on these games will be Trevor Francis Tuesday and our favorite Martin Keown for the Arsenal game on Weds.

I always think it's a bit of a shame when a broadcaster's Scottish commentator is sidelined when an English team (or England themselves) come to town. So Rae getting Arsenal and Real Madrid is a pleasant surprise.

I wonder if Sky would have done the same with Ian Crocker?
I kind of get what you're saying, and I much prefer Rae to Fletcher, but I guess it reflects the profile of the game and the commentator pecking order.

Scotland v England in June is obviously a very high profile game so why use your 6th or 7th choice commentator when your 1st choice is available?

And in the Sky cases they generally used the same commentator for each English team, and Tyler does all the England qualifiers, so I guess they would feel equally entitled to cover the game.

I enjoyed Sky's studio coverage yesterday. I really like Simon Thomas - I think his style is quite similar to Ed and he has that spark that Dave Jones perhaps can lack.

It was refreshing to see Neville in the studio andI hope they do it a bit more often now he's doing fewer MNF. Has Souness been on every week?

Carragher's role seemed a bit unnecessary - not sure the game was big enough to justify that. When they said Carragher was on the gantry I was hoping he'd do his first live UK co-commentary - will be interesting to see if this happens at any point or if Burnley v Liverpool was a one-off.

Not that I watch but the only issue with using Souness, Neville and Carragher on the Saturday means that Super Sunday is B team

I already knew he was garbage but that segment he did on goalkeeping kicking was some of the most cringeworthy attempts at punditry I've ever seen. And I do hope Francis and Keown was just a joke because that's bloody stupid otherwise. Jenas is comfortably better than Trevor 'where are my meds' Francis and Hargreaves trumps the grease monkey Keown!

To fill in the rest of commentary predictons, I say Drury with Jenas for CSKA Moscow V Spurs, Darke with Savage for Leciester V Porto and Fletcher, McManaman and Sutton for Celtic V Man City.

EL is a bit tricker but I think Darke and Hargreaves For Man United with Champion and Jenas for the Southampton game.

Bit of scouting for him as we play Liverpool soon.

Least it should be jolly and entertaining then.

I think I misread the Madrid game as the Tottenham game. I'd expect Jenas to remain on that then. I think Hargreaves will commentate on the Arsenal games when they're the main match on that day. Perhaps the likes of Keown/Francis/Mills will share out the times when they are 2nd choice.
