Have to say while I'm not always Jon Champion's biggest fan (and don't think Fletcher is nearly as bad as some say on here - though we have and will probably again debate it to death) the difference in commentary yesterday from normal for noticable.
I have to say I actually really enjoyed the commentary and would happily hear that partnership again. One of the times the 3-man team actually really worked for me.
Champion just sounds like he should be a main commentator. He just has a natural gravitas too that isn't easy to find (and you can't teach) and always seems very engaged and interested with the match he's watching.
And he worked well in the 3-man team - surprising as I can't imagine he's had much experience in one.
With BT often those 3-man commentaries can end up being far too busy but I thought it achieved a nice balance on Sunday. All three got to contribute but it didn't seem busy at all. The lack of nicknames was nice too.
Also I'm not sure why - as he was probably saying the same things Fletcher normally does - but the BT 'plugs' didn't feel quite as overbearing as they sometimes do.
Have to say too that Champion bought out the best in Hargreaves and Hoddle too. Definetely the best commentary I've heard from Hargreaves this season - he was certainly much more talkative than recent games (he's almost too quiet when covering European games for me, Clive) and avoided the tendancy he can have to simply do 'say what the viewer just saw' co-commentary.
And while I'm not a fan of Hoddle on co-commentary at all I thought even he was good.
As I say, I'm not Champion's biggest fan all the time. I agree at times he can almost be aloof with his commentaries but he can also produce very good commentaries and I'd happily have him back on a PL game for BT.
Surprised he appeared (thought it would definitely be Darke and that Rae or Drury would be ahead in the pecking order) but it was a nice surprise.
I just hope him appearing doesn't mean BT goes the way of the last 2 UK channels to use Jon Champion on a PL game.
Generally on co-commentary, I do think it's often is less about what you say and more about how you say it and having that co-commentary style. The points Alan Smith makes probably aren't that groundbreaking and I'm sure Martin Keown (as an example) could make similar points but the issue is more how you broadcast in that situation and having that 'co-commentary style'.
Sorry for the mini-essay there.
Also I agree with others - brilliant post Seagull_Mark.
