I think you will find in week 1 Fletcher had Arsenal then Man Utd on Thur's and then Man Utd again on Sunday so to be honest i really don't think BT would honestly think 3 games in 6 day's is to much at all.

Great to have the rare chance to hear Jon Champion today. I rate him as one of the very best in the business. With ESPN not broadcasting the next few World Cups, ITV should definitely be looking to bring him back in the frame rather than Matterface.

I suppose they will use Champion in some way but remember we had more than 4 commentators at the 2014 World Cup and the likes of Martin Fisher, Arlo White and Gary Bloom commentated for ITV. (some were off-tube BTW) Will we need more commentators involved for the 2018 World Cup? Probably not as it's not as far for the commentators to travel from the UK to Brazil than to travel to Russia from the UK. |

Out of interest, does anyone log or make use of the information posted in this thread or is it all to satisfy our own intrigue on this kind of thing and a place to look for future reference should we ever want to look anything up?

Tyler showing that champion is miles away from a number one position. Champion really irritated me today, sarcastic, poor conversation and pompous. I can understand those that rate him, but I really dislike his commentary.
Tyler streets ahead. I do wish sky though would stop with close ups on players for sometimes up to 5 seconds as play progressed. They missed potentially key action at least twice. |

I thought Champion showed today what a class above most others he is. Bringing in both co-comms seamlessly and effectively. Pauses are one of his strengths, much in the way Barry Davies would use them, and I thought perhaps a three man team would put an end to that but he was still able to use them effectively. The Man Utd goal call is a good example of letting the pictures and celebrations breathe before summing up in a quick soundbite.
The other advantage he has over Mowbray, Fletcher and, to a lesser extent, Hawthorne, is the rise and fall in his voice when it comes to chances. The play builds up and his voice gets more and more animated, the pace of voice gets quicker and when the chance arrives he lets you know with how he's said the words rather than just what he's saying. You could be looking away or at your phone and immediately know from his tone whereabouts the ball was. A trait I guess exists from his radio days. It was an all too rare treat to listen to him today and I'd love to see him do more for BT and ITV. Or preferably, number 1 with us at Sky! |

It's great this thread, all about opinions! I can see why champion is rated, to some he will be authoritative, distinctive and has a style similar to Barry Davies in some respects.
I however find him very irritating and smug. Compared to others on here I like Fletcher (though agree darke better) |

I think this is a brilliant, brilliant post. I always admire any piece of writing that goes into such specific details about someone's craft, particularly when complimentary, and it's a very strong summary of just why I rate Champion so highly.

Have to say while I'm not always Jon Champion's biggest fan (and don't think Fletcher is nearly as bad as some say on here - though we have and will probably again debate it to death) the difference in commentary yesterday from normal for noticable.
I have to say I actually really enjoyed the commentary and would happily hear that partnership again. One of the times the 3-man team actually really worked for me. Champion just sounds like he should be a main commentator. He just has a natural gravitas too that isn't easy to find (and you can't teach) and always seems very engaged and interested with the match he's watching. And he worked well in the 3-man team - surprising as I can't imagine he's had much experience in one. With BT often those 3-man commentaries can end up being far too busy but I thought it achieved a nice balance on Sunday. All three got to contribute but it didn't seem busy at all. The lack of nicknames was nice too. Also I'm not sure why - as he was probably saying the same things Fletcher normally does - but the BT 'plugs' didn't feel quite as overbearing as they sometimes do. Have to say too that Champion bought out the best in Hargreaves and Hoddle too. Definetely the best commentary I've heard from Hargreaves this season - he was certainly much more talkative than recent games (he's almost too quiet when covering European games for me, Clive) and avoided the tendancy he can have to simply do 'say what the viewer just saw' co-commentary. And while I'm not a fan of Hoddle on co-commentary at all I thought even he was good. As I say, I'm not Champion's biggest fan all the time. I agree at times he can almost be aloof with his commentaries but he can also produce very good commentaries and I'd happily have him back on a PL game for BT. Surprised he appeared (thought it would definitely be Darke and that Rae or Drury would be ahead in the pecking order) but it was a nice surprise. I just hope him appearing doesn't mean BT goes the way of the last 2 UK channels to use Jon Champion on a PL game. ![]() Generally on co-commentary, I do think it's often is less about what you say and more about how you say it and having that co-commentary style. The points Alan Smith makes probably aren't that groundbreaking and I'm sure Martin Keown (as an example) could make similar points but the issue is more how you broadcast in that situation and having that 'co-commentary style'. Sorry for the mini-essay there. Also I agree with others - brilliant post Seagull_Mark. |

Speaking of the 3-man team, why is/was Webb shown as a 4th commentator in an on-screen graphic before the game?
Doesn't he only feature at half-time or do they go to him for remarks on certain incidents during the game? (if anything debatable happens) (I should point out that I'm new to BT Sport and I only flicked through the coverage of this particular match) |
