Some tight scheduling by Sky today. Coverage of this game ended precisely 2 minutes after the final whistle to move onto the live rugby. I don't know what they would have done if the game had a long injury delay or something...

Saturday 8th October - Channel 5

Football on 5: Goal Rush

Lynsey Hipgrave presented alongside Nathan Jones and Adam Virgo

Peterborough United v Bury - Gary Weaver and Garry Birtles, with David Craig conducting interviews (as Sky Sports)
Swindon Town v Bolton Wanderers - Paul Walker

League One and Two round-ups - Alex Gordon-Martin, Faye Carruthers, Matt Williams and Oliver Wilson

There was a new name to the Football on 5 reporting ranks in Oliver Wilson, as he was captioned, although he's perhaps better known as Olly Wilson as he's referred to on talkSPORT where he's a regular match reporter on their football coverage, primarily based in London. He's also done the odd commentary for BT Sport on their European league football coverage. No George Riley this week, as he was at Old Trafford to commentate on the Super League Grand Final for BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra. So the international break came at a good time to that end.

There were no post-match interviews after any of the matches involving the Celtic nations, although all of the other games from their groups received a proper voiceover rather than just having Jacqui talk over the pick of the goals. They didn't take use commentary exerts on their edit of ITV4's live game from Thursday, Italy v Spain.

They always shove these matches in during international breaks, and for some reason they always seem to have loads of injury time. We had six minutes of injury time at Oxford earlier, and given the two matches were kicking off at 12.15 and 2.15 that cut it extremely fine. I don't know why the Oxford match didn't kick off at noon actually.

They did indeed, and also David Tanner spoke to Alan Smith from Wembley in the build-up to the Scotland game. Odd to see Tanner in the studio, I assume that meant he presented the England highlights as well?

Busy day for Adam Virgo, having been at Tranmere earlier on. The sound was completely out of sync for the vast majority of this programme, it looked like there was a massive breakdown during the first ad break, leading to a load of blank screen, and when it came back the sound was out of sync for the rest of the show. I wondered if it was my box for a bit until I checked other channels. Happened on SD and HD too.

Since we've now had a complete round of international fixtures, here are all the home nations together in one post...

Austria vs Wales - Introduced by Simon Thomas with Jack Collison and Dean Saunders, commentary by Bill Leslie and Barry Horne
Ireland vs Georgia - Introduced by Pete Graves with Niall Quinn, commentary by Rob Hawthorne and Ray Houghton
England vs Malta - Introduced by Mark Pougatch with Lee Dixon, Ryan Giggs and Ian Wright, commentary by Clive Tyldesley and Glenn Hoddle
Scotland vs Lithuania - Introduced by David Tanner with Neil McCann and Alex McLeish, commentary by Ian Crocker and Davie Provan
Northern Ireland vs San Marino - Introduced by Graham Little with Gerry Taggart, commentary by Daniel Mann and Gerry Armstrong

And the weekend's domestic football...

Peterborough vs Bury - Introduced by George Gavin with Peter Beagrie and Jack Collison, commentary by Gary Weaver and Garry Birtles
Tranmere vs Wrexham - Introduced by Matt Smith with Kevin Davies and Dean Saunders, commentary by Steve Bower and Adam Virgo
The Football League on Sky Sports - Introduced by George Gavin with Ian Holloway, Oxford vs Wimbledon commentary by Rob Palmer and David Prutton, Franchise vs Port Vale commentary by Gary Weaver and Danny Higginbotham

Quite impressive that Steve Bower is happy to continue his association with the Conference and do as many matches as he can when he's available (unlike Mark Clemmit packing it in completely when the majority began to clash with his other work). Not sure if Adam Summerton is so impressed with being asked to stand down every time a bigger name is available. Like Wilf McGuinness to Bower's Matt Busby, always in the shadow of his predecessor.

I thought this was just my TV! This happened on Channel 5 + 1 as well, which is where I watched the show as I got in late. I've not checked the My5 edition of the show yet, but I'm tempted to give it a look just to see if they managed to sort the issue out by the time they made it available on-demand. I've been critical of My5 on here in the past, but credit where it is due, this season they've finally begun to make both parts of Football on 5 available by early Sunday morning (as opposed to by some point early in the week as was often the case last term).

Yes, Senegal v Cape Verde was on last night, with Algeria v Cameroon on at 8:30pm tonight. A nice additional match to watch!

What a poor co-commentator Barry Horne is.
Talk about being bias. If that was Glenn Hoddle on about England he would get tons of stick.

I don't know about this (and sorry to be a terrible pedant, but the word is "biased" and its incorrect usage really annoys me). Obviously Horne wants Wales to win because he is Welsh and used to play for them, but to suggest he's a cheerleader for them seems bizarre, if anything he is one of the more critical and reserved pundits. I well remember a match a few years back, when Wales were still fairly rubbish, when Horne was still referring to "what we hope will be a Wales win" when they were leading in the added time to the added time, so used was he to consistent failure and disappointment.
