Anyone else quietly amused that Sky's embarrassingly OTT hype was followed by a game as poor as that?

Presentation is on-site, but they've got the touchscreen table with them (a la "The Last Word" when Andy Gray would do his MNF-style analysis after Super Sunday).
However, I did enjoy over the weekend the features on Ranieri at Chelsea and Middlesbrough in the eighties before their respective live games. They were really good, the Boro feature in particular had lots of footage I'd never seen before and was a genuinely fascinating story, and I saw it getting a lot of positive comments on Twitter. That's what I want to see more of in football coverage. Quote:
Also BT Sport is hosting the draw for the FA Cup first round with Hipgrave, Ince & James. Is that the first time under this contract that BT Sport has hosted a draw?
Though we now have the wonderful site, I'm still going to do my weekend list for my own amusement, even when I've been away for the weekend so do it pointlessly late... Cardiff vs Bristol City - Introduced by Scott Minto with Peter Beagrie and Steve Cotterill, commentary by Gary Weaver and Andy Hinchcliffe Chelsea vs Leicester - Introduced by Simon Thomas with Thierry Henry, Graeme Souness and Gianluca Vialli, commentary by Rob Hawthorne and Alan Smith Palace vs West Ham - Introduced by Jake Humphrey with Harry Redknapp and Ian Wright, commentary by Darren Fletcher, Owen Hargreaves and Trevor Francis Villa vs Wolves - Introduced by Kelly Cates with Lee Hendrie and Ian Holloway, commentary by Daniel Mann and Don Goodman Huddersfield vs Sheff Wed - Introduced by Scott Minto with Peter Beagrie and Jon Stead, commentary by Gary Weaver and Danny Higginbotham Super Sunday - Introduced by Dave Jones with Matt Le Tissier and Jamie Redknapp, Middlesbrough vs Watford commentary by Bill Leslie and Andy Hinchcliffe, Southampton vs Burnley commentary by Alan Parry and Niall Quinn Liverpool vs Man U - Introduced by Dave Jones with Jamie Carragher and Ryan Giggs, commentary by Martin Tyler and Gary Neville |

[T]he Jones line at the end about a 'Mourinho Masterclass' was awful and almost felt as if it were to justify the OTT hype beforehand.

Greatly amused to be honest - especially them then almost trying to defend the hype afterwards.
Sky's overhype of certain games has really started to grate on me recently - especially with the 'Red Monday' branding for this game (though Jose v Pep earlier this season was little better). It's only October for goodness sake. I mean Sky have done nicknames like 'Grand Slam Sunday' before but at least that's always seemed a bit tongue in cheek. Yesterday featured 2 teams that finished 5th and 8th last season respectively. I mean come on. The irony of the over hyping of "Red Monday" taking place in a Champions League week - a competition where neither team were good enough to qualify also amused me. |

Liverpool and Manchester United both being rubbish at the same time is great for football fans like me but is a nightmare for sky as they both rate higher than any other club.

Sky could not of wished for a worse game than that of tonight, poor game and i have to say Tyler and Neville were well below par as well.
Tyler doing his usual trying to joke with Neville and at times completly talking about anything and everything apart from the game itself. Neville is good on decent games but not tonight, game to forget for all concerned. With Neville he has a tendency to go off piste and strike up a random conversation or get irritated by something |

Apologies for sounding like a deluded Kopite here, but Liverpool are hardly rubbish when they could have gone top last night with a win.
Sky have already given up Liverpool v Man City and Man City v Spurs. I think there's a good chance that one or both of Liverpool v Spurs and Liverpool v Arsenal will end up on BT too. And this is all because Sky refuse to give up the big head to heads involving Man Utd. |

http://www.teamtalk.com/news/former-...as-had-his-day But i have to say in the most part he is right and last night he and Neville were poor and he does do a lot of silly facts which have nothing to do with the game in question. I am noway Darren Fletcher's biggest fan by far and he get's load's of stick on here, rightly so in my opinion but Tyler is now having more bad day's than good. |

Tyler has to join in the sky hype for PL's live games Tyler is still a excellent commentator as heard during euro2016 and world feed coverage of the Eng Fa Cup Tyler is better with Alan Smith |

I wasnt talking about the hype of last night's game, i was talking about the amount of times Tyler last night talked about something else which had nothing to do with the game, just trying to start up conversation with Neville for the sake of saying something.

Cricket lends itself a lot more to that kind of thing than cricket does, I think. Particularly in Tests, there's a lot of time for less-focussed chat. Football doesn't really allow for that kind of departure from the game at hand in quite the same way.
I've mentioned before but nicknames on cricket coverage seem to work and be acceptable (hi Bumble, Nash, Beefy, Athers, Mikey) whereas on football it doesn't work nearly as well on live matches, Fletch. Quote:
Li4m;84267558]"People are saying easily-embeddable things on Twitter," is what that's really saying. And the Echo are definitely not the only offenders in that regard.
I do chuckle at any articles that suggest Twitter as almost a being where everyone shares the same view. i.e. 'Twitter was outraged', Those sort of articles really are lazy - basically find 4 or 5 tweets that have the same view and hey presto an article. |

I agree - but MattN is correct to suggest that Sky have a bit of a problem. They'll die in a ditch before they give up Man Utd v Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool/Man City. Come 16:00 on Sunday Man Utd could be seven points behind third place. The narrative for the game on Sunday will be it's a must win game for Man Utd (and possibly Chelsea for that matter). That's why I chuckled at David Jones calling last night's game a Mourinho Masterclass. If the object of last night was to take points off Liverpool to harm their title chances then he did very well. But another draw on Sunday and they will be slipping out of contention.
As for Liverpool vs Man City, it's worth remembering it's in an inconvenient slot and maybe Sky decided the potential ratings there meant they could pass on it without being desperately broken hearted, especially as they have several other games in that period. They've certainly passed on many other big games before, Liverpool 5 Arsenal 1 is an example in 2013/14, which was much later in the season and at a time when Liverpool were favourites for the title. As for the hype, that has been an issue with Sky since day one, and indeed all football coverage. Quite often the big games don't live up to much - I remember The Guardian at the time Chelsea won the league complaining that they'd done so without a single memorable performance - and who now can remember the results or the quality of any given Grand Slam Sunday and so on throughout the years? But sometimes the big matches do deliver, so you can't just write them all off based on one bad one. Funnily enough on BBC4 we've got to May 1982 in the Top of the Pops repeats and the show truncated by the Cup Final replay, and John Peel said "Let's hope tonight's match is more interesting than the first one". It wasn't, of course, and that was a time when it was the only matches on TV all season, so live games were hyped to high heaven and it was a genuine problem when games were bad. This weekend wasn't very interesting but next weekend could be brilliant and all will be forgotten. Quote:
