So much for the hype of Darke calling.

I wouldn't exactly call it "hype".

I would, however, say this reinforces the point I made a few weeks ago about not jumping the gun.

Another decent commentary by Savage imo. Not nearly as shouty or argumentative as he has been in the past. Certainly not the worst 3 man commentary performance from BT (thus far). Particularly enjoyed Fletcher's comment about Savage's dancing with Sav replying he thinks he got a 7.

Handy having a goalie on MOTD with the lack of goals (good goalkeeping) in the Premier league!

Saturday 22nd October - Channel 5

Football on 5

George Riley presented alongside Paul Heckingbottom and Michael Gray

Bristol City v Blackburn Rovers - Paul Walker
Burton Albion v Birmingham City (Friday) - Daniel Mann and Andy Hinchcliffe, with David Craig conducting interviews (as Sky Sports)
Nottingham Forest v Cardiff City - Gary Weaver and Danny Higginbotham, with Jonathan Oakes conducting interviews (as Sky Sports)

Championship round-ups - Tom Skippings, Dan Mason, Dave Beckett and Sue Thearle
League One and Two round-ups - Nick Halling, Matt Williams, Dan Mason, Sue Thearle, Tom Skippings and Dave Beckett

No Lynsey Hipgrave this week, so it was just the one lead presenter. Riley and Barnsley manager Heckingbottom chatted over the edit of Brentford v Barnsley.

Bristol City v Blackburn Rovers is perhaps a curious choice of featured games by the international feed, but it was nice to see Football on 5 paying reference to and including footage of the City fans' tributes to the late Gerry Gow.

Yes the Gow tributes were excellent. Broadcasters always do an excellent job explaining about the tributes and who fans are doing a tribute for. I'm not sure why Lynsey was missing. I bet you enjoyed the two Walsall goals bearing in mind you support them. As a neutral I thought both goals were excellent.

I thought Danny Murphy and Mark Schwarzer made for a dull MOTD. Obviously not helped by a relatively quiet day, no real controversy, no dodgy ref decisions etc. The delivery was dull, there was little or no enthusiasm from either. Shearer is even better than that!

Someone more tactical like Murphy is fine but you need someone with some energy next to him!

Does feel like Murphy has gone downhill a lot in the last 2 years. I remember at the last World Cup we all thought he was fantastic whereas now as you say his delivery is awfully dreary and miserable.

On the energy point, I do feel Ian Wright works brilliantly on MOTD for that reason - he always seems really pleased to be on, injects life into proceedings and is normally able to provide a strong opinion and it makes for a good watch (especially as it's clear he gets on well with Lineker).
I mean Wright isn't the best pundit by any means but he works well when there's a pundit who can more of the in-depth analysis.

That said that MOTD line-up still sounds better than Sky's lunchtime pundits yesterday. Yikes!

Seeing as you've mentioned it, I certainly did! Erhun Oztumer's got to be one of the best players in the lower leagues and both his Beckham-esque and Bergkamp-esque goals yesterday were superb (as was his one directly from a corner the week before). It's a privilege to be able to watch him in a Walsall shirt.

I wonder why a commentator hardly appears on MOTD 2 Extra. They use two pundits and a newspaper columnist these days. It's not very often the likes of Steve Wilson and Guy Mowbray are in the studio.

If you're wondering the guests today are Mark Schwarzer, Phil Bardsley and Oliver Holt.
