Now here's something for tinfoil hat owners: Police unlock dead man’s phone with his recreated fingertips

This week, Michigan State University announced that its team of researchers led by Professor Anil Jain successfully unlocked the Samsung Galaxy S6.

They first tried both 2D and 3D models, but nothing worked. It turned out that “... the basic problem was the relatively poor quality of the fingerprints that were provided to us from the police files,”, when they cleaned them up, they were able to unlock the phone.

Sounds like a problem with the fingerprint authentication in the Samsung S6 - that wouldn't work on the iPhone after only a few hours it won't permit a login. Samsung hadn't thought of that....

On my S7 it won't let you unlock with a fingerprint immediately following a reboot. Not sure if it has a timeout if the phone has remained switched on though.

Pretty sure it would have. I'm sure people managed to fool the iphone fingerprint scanner a while back.

Not sure though what you mean about 'after a few hours it won't permit a login'. Do you mean after several failed attempts at a fingerprint scan fails, or when you just leave the phone for several hours it requires a pin and won't unlock with a fingerprint.

Can you configure iPhone so that it does not lock you out after failed logins? If yes, you can use it to find the best way to prepare the fingerprint that will work and once you have the procedure you can try it with the real phone and fingerprints.

After several hours (might be 8) since iOS 9 it won't let you use a fingerprint to log on and forces a PIN/password. I think with iOS 8 and earlier it was 24 hours. Also after a few (might be 5?) failed scans it forces a PIN/password and won't try and more fingerprint until after you've logged in.

Don't think you can with fingerprint. You can choose to wipe after 10 failures (fingerprint and/or PIN/password). There may be more options to management tools that in the user interface.

Yes you can do this anyway just PIN in, lock and try again with your own test device
