The new Red Hot Chili Peppers album is a disappointment.

Just given the album a THIRD spin and it's really dull as dishwater. What a shitty comeback.

I know they aren't everyones cup of tea, but there's always been a handful of great songs on each RCHP album, but this album just sounds "more-of-the-same-ol-same-ol" with some woefully weak songwriting.

I really enjoyed 2011's I'm With You, which was their first album without Frusciante. But this new one is just dull.

A couple of pleasant songs is the best thing I can bring myself to say about it. Sick Love and Go Robot are good, Detroit is alright, the rest is very underwhelming to my ears. The title track is a disappointing album opener which is a shame, because the Chili's usually always knock it out of the park with their album openers. And I think the album lacks a really good single (sorry, but Dark Necessities is only okay).

I'm with you was alright. but not as good as the previous albums with Frusciante.
Havnt heard the new album but i thought dark Dark Necessities was ok i agree that it sounds a bit paint by the numbers. a bit of a filler.. didn't entice me want to check out the album.

I completely disagree! This album has well exceeded my expectations... it sounds like RHCP, but I like that they've tried a few different things whilst retaining their classic sound. Nothing wrong with having some more mellow tracks, although the more upbeat/rocky tunes are my favourites overall. Go Robot and This Ticonderoga are my early faves at this point.

I also agree, it's a very solid album, better than I'm with you, similar to By The Way as far as being experimental, and it keeps to their roots with Flea's bass having awesome riffs.

As far as Frusciante is concerned, he is a great songwriter no doubt, but his last offering on Stadium Arcadium became very stale, too much soloing for the sake of it. Plus he's into too much weird electronica shit, besides Josh Klinghoffer is very underrated if not better than Frusciante.
Hell they have even started performing songs they otherwise wouldn't have revisited had John still been in the band.
Their decision to move away from Rick Rubin has served them well.

They've been on the decline since Californication
