Have a Panasonic Smart TV - can access iPlayer TV but cannot find how to access
iPlayer Radio. As I listen to quite a lot of radio through the TV there are occasions when I want to 'catch up' with previously broadcast progs.

But just cannot find how to do so - any help appreciated !

It could simply be that the app on your TV to access iPlayer only gives you the TV channels. If that is the case then not a lot you can do about it other than complain to Panasonic, then sit twiddling your fingers for the next 50 years hoping they update the app to include radio channels

The main problem is that the apps on Smart TVs don't necessarily give you access to the same version of iPlayer that you would get using your computer and a web browser. So you may not get the full functionality of the web iPlayer.

My Panasonic GT60 (2012/13?) has iPlayer and under Channels lists some Radio 1 stuff... maybe the BBC will add more if there's perceived demand? Panasonic are unlikely in the extreme to do much (although there was a new firmware release earlier this year for my set, which surprised me).

You may be able to (Mira)Cast iPlayer radio channels to the TV from a computer, phone or tablet?

Personally I perceive it a waste to drive a TV for listening only, but each to their own.

I don't think iPlayer Radio is available on TVs?

Ways to Listen to iPlayer Radio

You can listen to BBC Radio stations and catch-up with your favourite programmes with BBC iPlayer Radio.

BBC iPlayer radio can be accessed either through our website* at www.bbc.co.uk/radio or by using our app on your mobile or tablet device. You can find us at the following app stores:

Amazon Store
Apple iTunes App Store
Google Play Store
Windows Phone Store
We’re also available on internet radios, so there really are plenty of ways of accessing BBC radio.

You’ll need an internet connection to play (stream) programmes and stations. And if you want to listen when you’re out and about and not connected, you can download a programme or a Podcast version of selected programmes.

*You’ll need a modern browser to play programmes at www.bbc.co.uk/radio. Internet Explorer 8 is no longer supported. You can use your browser on your computer, Android, Kindle Fire and iOS device. Amazon and Android devices need the BBC Media Player app installed for playback.

The iPlayer apps on TVs are different to those you get on mobile devices or whatever. They access the BBC services through specific portals so it is basically down to a combination of the BBC and the manufacturer what services they can access.

Thanks for the above feedback/s - thought I was being ultra thick but seemingly not quite that bad - obviously TV manufacturers and BBC don't apply the same logic.

It could well be that Panasonic who control what the TV does think that if you are using a telly you might actually only want to use it to watch telly programmes so only open up the TV section of iPlayer. Which is a not unreasonable assumption really.

I wonder just how many people do use the radio section of Freeview, or even know there is a radio section?

iplayer no longer features radio on any version. Radio is separate and is available through iplayer radio which is now a separate service.

As Peter has said Radio was dropped from iPlayer some time ago, this was as a cost saving exercise due to low usage via TV platforms.
Taken from BBCiPlayer FAQS:
The underlying technology powering BBC iPlayer had reached the end of its life and needed upgrading. With Radio On Demand receiving little usage and it costing so much in terms of technical support, continuing to host Radio On Demand in its current format through BBC iPlayer became both technically and financially unfeasible.

On Demand Radio is very popular with our audience on platforms such as the PC, tablet and mobile platforms. However, through TV platforms, Radio on Demand in BBC iPlayer received comparatively very low usage.

We believe that radio and TV are used differently and as such, should be treated differently. While TV watching usually happens one programme (or series) at a time, Radio listening is more commonly an ongoing stream of music and voice programmes, which you might want to leave on for hours whilst also doing something else around the house…

For these reasons we’ve been removing On Demand Radio from BBC iPlayer, and are rethinking how best Radio on TVs could be made available to TV audiences.

I would be very surprised if you can get Flash to work on a TV web browser. Most of the one's I've seen have been very limited in what they are able to do. Using plug-ins like Flash may well be beyond the abilities of the browser.

You can't install flash player on a tv browser, that would be something only the manufacturer could add via a software update if it's at all possible.
