did he ever reveal it? I do remember a heated argument one day about the partition of Ireland

he was probably catholic.

generally speaking

Rep of Ireland = Catholic
Northern Ireland = Protestant

though you'll find churches for both in both areas, and nowadays, attitudes to religion are much more relaxed with many young irish being casual and barely qualifying as practitioners of Catholicism.

Not sure if it's even important. He was in the house all those weeks and didn't attend mass or church so I'm guessing he doesn't give a ****.

Just like we shouldn't.

if he is a Republican/Catholic though, it might explain his hostility toward some of the English/British HMs

Why would you assume that catholics are republicans?

What a weird thing to say. Seriously.

if he had anti-British sentiments, i doubt he would go on a UK television show with no other irish people in sight. his hostility seemed pretty reactionary to personalities and not based on any ideology. he's from Dublin as well, so highly unlikely he has that kind of mindset...and as a traveller, he's probably more preoccupied with the rampant discrimination against them here. i literally hear a derogatory term for traveller every second day.

anyway that kind of hostility is significantly rarer in the republic of ireland than it has been in the past, but if it does arise, it would be in the context or an english person settling in ireland. i know of some british people who experienced such hostility in Irish schools...

things are tenser in the north. an irish person wouldn't go to england with anti-british convictions, and even if they had them, they'd probably hide them out of cowardice...unless they were a member of the IRA, in which case they'd let you know their stance with a gunshot wound or bomb-in-car.

There are many Protestants in the Republic. Graham Norton's from Cork and he's a Protestant.

I'm Irish and generally most people from the Irish travelling community are Catholic, haven't actually come across any who aren't!

I was actually shocked about the debate between him and Laura about Ireland being in a British country! Do they teach ye about the war between in Ireland and Britain in British schools? Was surprised Laura didn't know the republic of Ireland was its own independent country!!!

obviously not everyone, hence 'generally speaking' and i said there's churches in both.

think it's something like 80% catholic. i reckon that's reduced a lot in recent years though.

yes, everyone think it's in the UK. I expect that from Americans and the like, but you'd think the countries that actually ARE in the UK would know which countries are actually in it...

Laura was thick as sh!t though - I expect she was one of those girls who didn't pay attention in school, but was too busy 'servicing' the male pupils

Oh and like someone said above the majority of the Republic of Ireland are Catholic, not all but most! We generally have a Catholic Church in every village (never mind a town) and in my own town we have one Protestant church which is now closed because there was no families in the area to use it! A lot of the wars up north happened due to religion because of the division of Protestant and Catholics, there's a lot more Protestants in the north!!

I was so shocked! It's such a big part of what we're taught in school! Liked Hughie's little lesson though and mentioning 1916....

The OP is usually obsessed with creating threads about race and now they add religion. I wonder what their agenda really is. DOES IT F****** MATTER?

listen kid, I fought at the Battle of Bogside, so I have first hand experience of the Troubles. I got some anti-Loylalist vibes from Hughie when I was watching him sometimes

I remember that conversation between Laura, Evelyn and Hughie. Evelyn had asked if "Ireland" was part of the UK. Laura wasn't sure and said "it's confusing". You're 30 years old, Laura. It's not confusing!
Hughie did his best to explain to poor thick Laura about the Republic, and the six counties in the North. Hughie mentioned the 1916 uprising.

It probably isn't covered too much in British history classes, however everyone in the UK from an early age should know that Northern Ireland is part of the UK, whereas Southern Ireland is separate. However, as Strange Quark stated - I doubt Laura paid much attention in school, or many of the BB contestants for that matter!

Hughie was by far one of the most intelligent in there!

you mean the UVF and UDA? As the adage goes, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter....

remember, Ulster was under seige. But of course there were crimes committed on both sides

Hughie did us proud, wish we got to see the full conversation! The 100 year anniversary of the uprising was this year in Ireland and was a huge deal! Was nice to see it mentioned on British TV, even if he was explaining it to the likes of Laura 😂😂

Dont usually get too much animosity towards the Brits from the Southerners. You might still get a bit among some of the republican areas in the North. Hughie is 100% RC. His mammy has a statue of the blessed virgin with rosaries hanging over it sitting behind her in a photo in some paper. Hughie might have been annoyed at Laura's ignorance rather than disliking Brtis.
