I have a labrador, and he's lovely, but he was quite a challenge as a puppy and quite frankly I think he'd walk off with a stranger if given any kind of treat.

Our late retriever was like that she would go off with anyone get in any car, lovely when they are that friendly but a bit embarrassing when they just love everyone and don't mind who they go home with.

Any dog that is owned by a decent owner will surely be loyal?
Only ever owned border collies so have nothing to compare them to. I'm shocked that they're consistently in the top ten most aggressive dogs, but I guess that's due to the working ones? Any that I've owned (and come across) have been very social, calm and friendly - well, unless they have a ball or a stick, then everyone and everything will be ignored! I imagine dalmations to be loyal, friendly and a calming influence... Met a few labs with a mean streak, so don't buy into that "Andrex" image and I'm more protective of my dog around them than quite a few other breeds. |

Whenever we went out as a family with our 2 boys, he wouldn't let us go our separate ways, he would keep running backwards and forwards until we all went the same way. He never attacked or bit another dog or any human being, whereas he was attacked by other dogs several times. He was a big softie. |

Was it a lab who killed a bloke the other day, no, it was a staffie.

I have met some horrible Labradors, a black one bit the dog I was training on the face the other day. So, there! Unfortunately some people don't seem to get that it is individual dogs that are a problem, they all have certain breed traits but most dogs if bred properly, socialised properly and trained are of no problem. |

I've had 2 labs a Greyhound cross and two Staffies we currently have a Staffie and it's the those who are the most lovable and loyal they really are amazing dogs.
You should own a Staffie before judging them. |

Very loyal dogs are the chihuahua but if not reared properly can be over protective
But like sny breed or mongrel it depends on how you treat it, and rear it, |

Only ever had bull terriers, a mini bull, staffies and now a staffy/jrt cross. Bull terriers of those types have all been daft as a brush and very people-oriented. My current staffy cross follows me everywhere, and sulks when I go out even though I'm leaving her with my sons. She adores the kids, though. I've never known a staffy that wasn't absolutely loyal and affectionate. They were bred like that as when they were fighting dogs, they'd change hands for sums of money and have to go to new owners a lot, during their lives, so they are an unusually people-centric dog.
I've known some lvoely labs and some horrible ones. They seem very unpredictable mainly because their 'Andrex puppy' cute appeal led to them being overbred by unscrupulous backstreet breeders, so they're not bred for temperament. I understand show stock is different to working stock. My family were poachers so had working dogs. (Labs). They weren't cute pets. I grew up being quite wary of labs as my only experience of them were the ones that worked for a living and they totally weren't there to be petted. That Andrex campaign - like the Dulux one - did those breeds real damage. |

I'm still open minded about labs and they're a breed I'd definitely consider owning in the future. I'm someone who blames the owner rather than the dog, but - and I realise I'm contradicting myself here - I can't help but be slightly more protective of my dog around labs than other breeds, just because of past experiences. |
