1. Laurie & Val - a wonderful and strong first performance from the Olympic gymnast, her movement in the Cha-cha-cha was powerful and dynamic. I expect her to make the final. Projected finish (2nd)
2. James & Sharna - the racing car driver delivered a fantastic Foxtrot, his frame was really splendid and he only went off time once, I think he will be another finalist. Projected finish (3rd)
3. Marilu & Derek - a great first showing from this television legend, she clearly has the moves and I think they will make the final - a dark horse for the mirror ball I would say. Projected finish (1st)
4. Jana & Gleb - very sultry, great chemistry and good lines from the country music singer. I do think she will surprise, and end up in the latter half of the competition. Projected finish (5th)
5. Babyface & Allison - the music icon was smooth and silky, as I expected. He moves well for his age, and I think he is another that will reach the later stages of the show. Projected finish (6th)
6. Calvin & Lindsay - I don't think the football great will win this season, but I do believe he could improve and make the final with the NFL vote to bat - this was a charismatic performance and he nailed almost all the movements. Projected finish (4th)
7. Vanilla Ice & Witney - I don't believe the rap legend nailed the dance style, most of the good parts came in the hip-hop sections, so I am unsure if he will actually be good in Ballroom and Latin, however, this dance is enough nostalgia to see him safe and mid-table this week. Projected finish (10th)
8. Maureen & Artem - why are people being so hard on this Brady Bunch icon? I have watched her Viennese Waltz back several times, and I certainly think she was underscored. Though she does need to finesse her moves and calm her nerves a bit, she showed great promise and looked very stately and elegant. I think she could make it further than expected. Don't count her out! Projected finish (9th)
9. Rick & Emma - though the Former Governor of Texas was undoubtedly the worst dancer on the night, and he made several mistakes, his charisma is undeniable. I think his Ballroom might prove quite lovely, and I think he will survive this round...and possibly a few thereafter. Projected finish (8th)
10. Terra & Sasha - this reality television star did touch my heart with her drive and determination. However, the actual Jive was stompy and didn't have a great deal of finesse. She was over-marked, and I am just not sure she can make it much further - how, pray do tell, will she perform a Ballroom dance? Projected finish (12th)
11. Amber & Maks - I was hugely disappointed in the model and television host's performance. It was very stompy and lacked emotion - I felt her dance was worse than Maureen's and yet she received higher marks? I do, however, believe she will excel in Latin and could surprise us yet. Projected finish (7th)
12. Ryan & Cheryl - another disappointment from the Olympic swimmer. His Foxtrot lacked flow, and any swing and sway. It was fairly stompy, like Amber, and I don't think his public profile will help him - thus the low ranking. Projected finish (11th)
13. Jake & Jenna - and worst for me was the Disney Channel actor, who's Jive had several awkward moments and mishaps. I think he will fall by the way-side quick, and is my pick for the first to leave the Ballroom after the votes are counted next week. Projected finish (13th)

What do you all think of my initial thoughts / analysis?
I agree just think that Rick will be gone 1st with Maureen and Tera but the top end I agree with a lot, id be supprised if Derek doesn't get mirrorball 7 good review if I may say so of the couples

My favourites were James and Babyface, although for me, Babyface didn't have any in hold in the Foxtrot, he genuinely looked like he enjoyed it, and I enjoyed it.

James was superb and I am surprised how good Marilou was, but then again, she has got Derek.

BIB - Excerpt from Wikipedia:

"Her mother was president of the National Association of Dance and Affiliated Arts and ran the Henner Dance School for 20 years. Henner took her first dance class at age two then went on to teaching dance at her family's studio when she was 14 and choreographed shows at local high schools and colleges until leaving the Chicago area during her third year of college."

I'm afraid I thought Marilu just okay. Well, pretty darn good for a 64 year old in her first dance, but oddly disappointing given her background. I'm very suspicious of the 'waist-up' camera work. Notwithstanding the crowd obscuring her feet, I just felt the camera choices looked very deliberate. When we did see her legs, they looked spiky and awkward. A good dance to get out of the way.

I thought Maureen's VW a little underrated. Her nerves showed in her face and her uncertainty got in the way, but she was graceful. The tears will get annoying.

Amber - didn't like this at all. Some incongruous weird bit in the middle.

James was decent - especially for a male/non-dancer

Laurie was excellent. She seems to have more natural dance talent than the other gymnasts we've seen and a lovely upbeat personality. The cha cha was just straight up choreo, too, which I like early doors

Jana - seems a natural. Hope Gleb doesn't overcook the sexy.

Ryan - better than I expected.

That's all I've watched so far...to be continued

BIB - Max didn't seem to pleased about getting her, so I almost wonder if he added it to make her look silly. Perhaps telling her something like "Oh yeah, this a standard ballroom move."

Ha! Managed to make himself look silly into the bargain then.

I'm fixated by her bum. She's clearly entitled to do as she wishes with her body, but this fad for ridiculous arses is perplexing me

Contrary to what a lot of people think, I still don't think Laurie has it in the bag. Mostly because of Val. He's notoriously awful with freestyles and I'm sorry to say but one of the main reasons why he won with Rumer was because the show finally decided that it was his time and invested into making that happen.

Whenever he has been in a final with Derek, the latter beat him. Season 16 everyone swore up and down he would win with Zendaya, same monentum, talented dancer. ...but in the finals Derek did that freestyle with Kellie pickler and won. Everyone was shocked. I'm just saying , never count him out

I still think that Derek and his partner will edge them in the finals and potentially win. I think that at the moment , with all the momentum on Laurie people are forgetting/underestimating Derek which is a No, No.
Will be very surprised if Laurie doesn't win. She's famous with all Americans, whereas Zendaya was probably just known by teens. Add to that her charisma and her natural dance ability (much better than some past gymnasts), and this is hers to lose. Even many on the Derek superfan pureDWTS blog were ranking Marilu below other couples. Also, saying that Val won when the producers deemed it to be his time could also apply to some of Derek's wins. In any case, the producers are much more likely to push a win for America's gold medal sweetheart than for a 1970s sitcom actress.

I keep reading that the camera avoided Marilu's bottom half and her feet - and they were obscured in other ways as well. Plus the judges gave them a undeserved tongue-bath (according to many.) I get so sick of Derek's partners being propped. It happens again and again....
Derek is an expert at making his celebs look good. He likes to keep them close and dancing in a very small area and no wide shots.

I read the PureDWTS blog before watching the clips, and I don't know why I bothered.

They were basically making out that Marilu had just performed the best jive EVA. I watched it, and it was far from perfect, despite her strong dance background.

Also, since Laurie is a gymnast, she's already been deemed a ringer. I didn't hear those accusations when Mark had Aly? Or are they only ringers when they're good, despite having the same training?

They really are so biased over there, and swarm down like harpies on any dissenting views.

Want to survive over there? DEREK=GOOD VAL=BAAAAD

ETA - I'm a big fan of Derek...I just find Pure's militant dogma a bore.
Please post there! I love it when newbies post innocuous comments and are torn apart by the harpies! The main mod is especially hilarious in her blind devotion to Derek.

Well, she never gets a chance to out dance the other pros...

NO, Allison, doing everything fast *doesn't* make it better.

Bless her, but her dancing is such an eyesore.

Not that I think Gleb is averse to sexing it up, but I think the producers are pushing that. All the other pairs can't be put in the "sexy couple" slot because of age differences (or lack of overt sexiness) excepting Maks and Amber and I don't think the producers would push that with them because all the viewers know he's having a baby with another DWTS dancer.

My own wacky theory/opinion is the producers love the rivalry between the Hough and the Chmerkovskiy and that is why they get the contenders. It will be a showdown between those two come the end of the season and it keeps twitter buzzing.

But third place is open. I think Jana and James might be contenders depending on how it plays out because they both don't have dance experience, did a fairly good job and have good chemistry with their pros. But you never know, there might be some surprises. According to wikipedia Jana has tango next week so another ballroom. It looks like Ryan has the QS so again another ballroom if wiki is accurate.

I don't know if James has a ballroom or Latin but I hope he has a Latin to see how he handles that. The novice men have such a hard time with Latin even when they are good at ballroom. I saw an Q&A with him and Sharna and he had very little practice time because of his schedule and only 5 days to work on his foxtrot. Sharna says he picks it up quick. I feel like he is the partner that Emma should have gotten but happy for Sharna.

Jana has posted on her twitter page that she is seeing a doctor for back pain. Hope this doesn't affect their preparation for next week as I loved Team Glamer's first week.

I hope she's ok to dance but something tells me she may have to withdraw which would be a shame if true

What do you all think of my initial thoughts / analysis?
I like your analysis a lot. I finally got around to watching all the dances though I skipped some of the VT's, so anyway I'll comment, as I don't expect to watch many more episodes. (pretty dull lot imo)

1 - Laurie 1st - I think barring injury, she will easily win. She's very good - sharp/quick - but I'm bored with the partnership. It would have been interesting to see her with Artem and would have renewed my faith a bit in the humanity of the producers... but what a silly pipedream that they have any humanity.

2 - 2nd James - he's very coordinated and graceful and Sharna's good (and the show likes her and wants her in the final I bet.) I like Sharna's personality - it always pops.

3 - 3rd Marilu - ugh. Skinniest legs I've ever seen - I wonder if there's been some muscle wasting - sorry to be rude but I think you sometimes see that after 60. I thought for a trained dancer she was stiff and tentative. There's a reason he was hiding her legs and feet. But she has their dreamboy - I swear I think he has custom-made contracts that guarantee his sister a spot at the judges' table and himself at least a 4th place, but I think they want the Val v Derek thing and she'll be 3rd. (and she's the main reason I'm likely checking out after next week.) Don't really like her based on almost nothing and I certainly don't like our "hero" who bravely yelled at 4 ladies, 4 rows away, who were showing no sign of getting anywhere near him or vice versa.... What, me bitter?

4 - 7th Jana - who?? And Gleb won't be remembered. Some easily-titillated viewers will vote for them I guess but I don't see her lasting long. There's something a bit sloppy about Gleb sometimes - I can't quite figure it out. And she's bleached blonde cheerleader dulllll - not enough vulnerability and, well, with Derek, Val, Maks on board, Gleb will fade imo - he's dull too, behind the pretty.

5 - 6th Babyface - likeable enough, moves well, Allison's too frantic. meh.

6 - 4th Calvin - he's ok and he's a football player. Lindsay's very endearing but blah. Not sure about this placement - might should switch with Amber.

7 - 12th Vanilla - he's on tour, was added at the last minute, I don't think he suits the demographics of the show (elderly/conservative.) Witney bores me. So many vanilla girl pros - will fade out compared to Cheryl/Sharna.

8 - 11th Maureen - oh dear - a nervous wreck. I can't see her relaxing into some decent Latin and Marilu has the older-lady slot wrapped up. Sorry but she makes me nervous/ uncomfortable with all that panicky mess.

9 - 13th Rick - the southern-gothic paradox strikes again - people with the most appalling views and stupidity are nevertheless charming, one on one. He'll probably last longer but I think they'd rather prop Terra (political correctness) and Jake.

10 - 9th Terra - She's cute but I just don't see how this is gonna work at all. Sasha's eyes look dead which I expected from Artem but he surprised me w/his engagement.

11 - 5th Amber. Another reason I'm skipping out soon. Why balloon up your arse like that? Yuck. Maks? Yuck, especially when he knows he won't make the final. She looks so exotic but she's so vapid - he makes Ryan look humble and personality-ordered. But the show will prop them because he's a star-pro. Hope I'm wrong though - it would be fun to watch him leave early - Derek too but that'll never happen

12 - 8th Ryan. I may have him too low as I think the show will prop him and Cheryl is very savvy and well liked. She's so clever with choreo like Kym, without using smoke and mirrors a la Derek. She's clever with everything. He got lucky with Cheryl. He dances like Frankenstein though, but did very well, a la personality, shockingly.

13 - 10th Jake - You're probably right about him leaving first but I have a hunch the show wants the kiddies to do well because they want kiddies to watch so desperately. He's a jerk though. Only 22 or whatever and already a DUI and while on probation, a hit and run. He makes Ryan look like a braindead Dalai Lama - oh and Vanilla's been arrested for beating his wife among others, but Ryan's our villain to be rehabbed I guess. Jenna's a fake/camera hog/yuck. Guess I've got my venom out and now I can move on, sans DWTS, for yet another drab session.

~ A Quick & Dirty Score Sheet ~

Jana & Gleb - 8.5 (look, I'm sorry, but I'm team Bruno)

Laurie & Val - 8.5 (most likely our winner)

James & Sharna - 8 (with polish he could actually steal the title from Laurie, they have great chemistry)

Marilu & Derek - 7 (STOP OBSCURING PEOPLE'S FEET WITH THE AUDIENCE)

Maureen & Artem - 6.5 (U N D E R S C O R E D)

Amber & Maks - 6.5 (kinda hope she improves, I'm going against the grain a bit but I actually really love her and Maks together, I think they both have that "sharp exterior, gooey centre" vibe, and it'd be good for her to show a less unabashedly brassy side to her personality)

Rick & Emma - 5 (bless)

Everyone else faded into nothingness for me, but they have another dance next week to change that. So far the only stand-out wrong'un is Jake, who just seems insincere and a bit brittle, but again I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

This was a brilliant read--a skillful mix of faintly positive comments and ruthless pronouncements. Please continue this for the entire series.

One thing I'm so thankful for on Strictly - far fewer godawful, gimmicky themed weeks!

Are you referring to James H. or any least liked contestant?

He is doing a weekly behind the scenes vlog and he says that after they started rehearsing (he only has 2 days of rehearsal for this dance) they came in and told Sharna she had use a different song and a different theme so they had to scratch it and start over. He showed a video of Sharna working through new choreo. Evidently walking dead is more appropriate.
