I felt more offended when Heavy D called Bear a c***, but I have no love for any of the two of them.

A contestant was removed from BB a few years ago (sorry, don't remember names or exact series) for using the N word. And quite right too.

How many times has somebody said something offensive only to then say "It was just a joke" well sometimes these "Jokes" hurt and cause offensive.

In Biggins case what if someone made a homophobic remark onlt to then say "Well it was just a joke"

And I say this as someone who has been a Biggins fan as far back as I can remember.

It's being broadcast to a million people so it's not just some old fool having a chortle with his mates down the pub. C5 can't be seen to condone bigotry. People joking about the holocaust around a Jewish person is offensive full stop.

And it wasn't said maliciously, if I recall correctly. The girls were dancing & she said it in the way that some black people talk to other black people (she was too young & naive to understand that as a white girl she could not use the word).

I wonder if you have forgotten the incident and the context along with the names and series. Dragging that wee girl from her bed to eject her in her nightwear in the small wee hours was the most monumental over reaction to a mere word!

It was not "quite right too" in my opinion. I remember the incident and the context in which the word was used. There was no malicious intent behind its use, similar to when white folks sing along to rap songs (which are liberally spread with the word in question).

Even when discussing the use of the word (as they did in CBB a few years ago) the housemates were issued a warning. They were not cussing each other, simply discussing why the word is such a hot potato.

Context is everything.

I also agree with the OP regarding the right to decide personally whether I am offended or not by actions or words of another.

You do recall correctly and I agree with you.

That's right, and it was Channel 4 days.
Just goes to show how incindiary racial issues are, and how careful broadcasters have to be around these things. I wonder if we'll ever find out what Biggins actually said.

I'd say we will. Biggins has the right to clear his name and give his own version of events.

Think it was more due to fact they'd just had the Shilpa shetty/ jade goody series a few months before and didn't want more hassle and complaints

None would have been any the wiser had they just not mentioned it

Cocaine is illegal. Would the pearls be the sort that are placed in body orifices, and yanked out at the appropriate moment?

Depends on the subject matter though doesn't it and societies view of the affected demographic. Society cares about the LGBT community.

"If" it is offensive enough to not say it around Jewish people, then it is too offensive to be said at all.
The idea of everyone merrily laughing away about concentration camps and slavery behind the backs of Jewish people and black people is repugnant.

But a racist/sexist/etc comment can (and is likely to) change someone's entire opinion of a person. If they didn't show it/acted like it didn't happen then many people would be potentially voting for someone to win based on false pretences.
