I think we would need to hear the joke to know if ether he or it was truly anti semetic and if he thought he was getting away with something, there are dark subject jokes and several Jewish comedians have told holocaust humour , so one would have to hear it to know whether he crossed the line and if a simple apology would have sufficed if someone was offended.
