So it actually did reach the top 40.
That's the thing, in 1971 the Top 40 wasn't a thing. The chart be it Radio 1 or Melody Maker was the Top 30. It's not to say there wasn't a top 40, it was a top 50 or 75 but Radio and Tv only reported a top 30. Anyway the point to me was I always thought Diamonds did much better. 38 isn't even that great nowadays or do you think that is a big hit?

Roxy Music - Do The Strand. Didn't even dent the charts. And yet they had a top 10 hit with Pyjamarama, which few now have ever heard of.

'Do the Stand' wasn't released as a UK single until '78 though, well after it had become well known. And Pyjamarama wasn't an album track which might explain its success.

Elton John - Step Into Christmas

Being a Christmas song you're likely to hear this at some point in December but when released it peaked at #24. I thought it had been a top 10 hit at least in the 70s. Also interesting to note that the original Are You Ready For Love? peaked at #42 in 1979 whilst Norman Cook's remix got to #1 in 2003.
So it DID make the top 40.

The point to me was that the thread says Top 40, but it's not worth arguing about, I take your point.

Was that back in the days the charts were still known as the hit parade?

there were a lot of 'radio' hits in the 70s like
Dean Friedman 'Ariel' which got loads of airplay but didnt chart strangely. Its really catchy.

Bob Segar's Shakedown went to number 1 in the US but failed to reach top 40 here.

I think the likes of Segar, Petty, Allman Brothers etc fitted in with the American market a lot more than the UK.
