Effectively he was pushed out. But the exact reason for his departure was probably "negotiated."
"We ain't renewing your contract," but, "in a good way," as Claude would say. It must have been a shock to him when he was genuinely ill one week and the ratings increased during his absence. The facts being, it really didn't matter who presented it. As I've mentioned before, the odds on him "doing a Tommy Cooper," were shortening. It would have been bad enough with a one performance show as was poor Tommy Cooper's death on stage, but in the middle of a fifteen week run? It'd be a catastrophe. They might interview him for a recorded bit that could be added to the Christmas Show. A decision on whether to include it "depending on circumstances," could always be left to the last minute as the whole thing is recorded. He looked shocking in the last recorded contribution he made, the make up was so thick, it looked like he'd been embalmed, the poor sod. Can you imagine if he dropped dead on camera? I am sure he would say it would be a fitting end to a long and illustrious career, but it would sure put a dampener on the show. Christmas special wouldn't be so bad because it is recorded. |

The majority of viewers at home would love to see Sir Bruce return for The Christmas Show.
Many of the viewing public are more likely to be asking "Bruce who?" |

If he is still recovering from that - his health is clearly very fragile and he would be more doddery than ever - even doing a pre- recorded show. Let him have a prime seat in he audience (or even be a guest judge) for the Christmas Special - but for goodness sake - just let Tess and Claudia get on with the great job they have been doing for the last couple of years |

That operation happened almost a year ago - and as it was keyhole surgery - hardly "invasive" - and yes, I've had several keyhole surgeries myself so do know what I'm talking about.

I don't blame anyone around him for keeping his mind fixed on potentially being well enough to host a one-off show, as I suspect they feel this keeps his spirits up, and may contribute to his recovery. I just think it's a bit unrealistic, and I seriously doubt we'll ever see him doing any hosting duties in the future. |

The surgery itself may not be invasive and, if you are in good health, young and relatively fit, they are fairly simple surgeries to recover from. If you're in your 80's, have indeterminate health relating to other possible pre-existing conditions, then recovery is a very different prospect. Complications are rare, but happen, or infections, that would be shaken off rapidly by anyone younger, mean a hugely complicated and lengthy recovery.

The fact that they did the surgery "keyhole" could actually tell us that he was too frail to have ordinary surgery which requires longer and deeper anaesthesia, and definitely has a much longer recovery time.
That said - he did the recorded Children in Need show, but fell ill before the Christmas show was recorded only a couple of weeks later - and he didn't look well in his recorded message. Taking 11 months to recover shows that he is too ill/ frail/ unable to truly contemplate doing the long and tiring Christmas show, and I don't remember seeing him at Ronnie Corbetts funeral, and given hoŵ good pals they were, it's surprising that he wasn't there if he was able to be out and about. |

No it still isn't , unless you wish to tell every employee in the country when to retire as we fund all people by shopping where we spend our money and our taxes in one way or another etc Forced Retirement ( DRA) in general was abolished and has never existed in entertainment, you don't force someone to retire because you personally don' t like them or they no longer appeal to you.

Of course Len's final broadcast show will be the Christmas show not the final of the series
I think if Bruce does appear we'll be in for a shock at how frail he looks ![]() |

Best wishes to Bruce for his recovery.
Hope he makes his target of participating in the Christmas Special. I hope so too Ochre, the British Public will be right behind Sir Bruce as always. |

I agree. He is too much of a liability just because of his sheer age and the high risk of a catastrophe. Bear in mind SCD is live and is sparkly, frothy, feel-good, light entertainment.

Christmas special wouldn't be so bad because it is recorded. Any thoughts of dying on stage are selfish and unfair on anyone present. I saw Tommy Cooper collapse and I wouldn't want to see it again. |

I think however, that when they do not appeal to the majority of viewers, as I believe is the case here, it's time to retire from the show. If you still want to stay in the entertainment business and people are willing to employ you, then so be it.

There is, of course, the fact that although the BBC say they would welcome him back if he wants to do it, they will do a risk assessment before deciding whether or not to offer him a contract.
They wouldn't look at him and say "Well, even though it's likely you'll be taken ill or worse in the middle of filming, we'll be happy to spend all that money recording part of the show and then have to do it all again when we have to get a new presenter to take over." |

I am sure that his wife will not let him do any more than she thinks he can manage. I can't him presenting the whole programme, perhaps a couple of short appearances.

Unlikely - he wasn't looking 100% when he last appeared and he's had a further year of ill health added. If you want to remember him looking really old and frail, then keep hoping he'll do the Christmas Special.
Sir Bruce is very fit for his age and drinks a lot of water, we must be careful not to paint a misleading portrait of his appearance, that would not be fair at all. |

Terry, as someone who's big a fan of Bruce Forsyth, perhaps you should be encouraging him to take care of himself, not encouraging him to risk damaging his health even further by taking on tasks that he no longer has the stamina for. Just a thought.

Having a healthy amount of exercise for ones age, eating sensibly and drinking sensible amounts of water to stay hydrated are more important and safer than drinking lots of water. |

People retire when they feel the time is right, some do occasional work , it is not for us to tell anyone it is time they stopped.
Now some bodies great Uncle Harry aged 87 would maybe love to do it, would we want him to no! It's not a service for people to pop up on now and again, even for free, no fee, people have to actually want to watch them. |

Glad he's in better health, but he's sorely mistaken if he thinks Strictly needs him.
Much in the same way that Anton and Brendan clearly think they carry the show. |

Yes it is, we pay his wages, in the way of the licence fee, if we don't then who is it up to?

You pay the wages of the shop worker where you shop, you pay the wages of every entertainer on every channel via advertising , the police officer , the fire fighter, the teacher, in fact you contribute to everyone's wages in one way or another so you think you should say when they all retire or is it just those employed by the BBC ?
Secondly, once people in the professions you listed are no longer able to perform their jobs to an adequate standard - I'd imagine they be advised by their management to pass on the baton, so to speak. Meanwhile, Bruce stumbles on his lines, uses tired old gags and generally makes fellow presenters, professional dancers and celebrity contestants visibly uncomfortable. Why shouldn't people have a say in that? But again, wish him all the best, but don't feel he belongs on Strictly at this point in his career. |

Well, firstly the professionals that you listed all receive fairly average wages - whereas Bruce earns a painfully exorbitant amount to stand around and read something someone else wrote.
