I don't think it is possible to take history (and still relatively recent history) out of the equation in this case.
With the sheer number of Jews murdered in the Holocaust, chances are that virtually every Jew alive now, at least if of Western European descent, had a relative affected. Either they were sent to a concentration camp and survived, or were executed, or they spent years in hiding or had to flee their country of birth to start again.
Therefore, making a comment, even one made in gest without intending to hurt, which specifically references the way these executions were carried out is going to be offensive and stir up feelings of horror, anger, upset, grief or even fear.
Genuinely, if your Gran or Great Gran had been murdered in such a way, would you take the attitude of 'taking history out of it'?
By the way, Jews are still very much being persecuted or murdered in many places, including the Middle East. Though it has to be said, they do their fair share of persecuting and murdering Muslims back over there.
Whilst of course there is hate crime against the LGBT community in all countries and some do still have the death penalty and that is in no way acceptable and should be fought against, it is not, as far as I'm aware, being carried out in a genocide way as it was in Nazi Germany and anywhere they occupied.
Of course, it is worth remembering that Jews were not the only people they persecuted, they also hated homosexuals, gypsies and the disabled. But they weren't as successful in that area, partly because they weren't as easy to identify as Jews.
