Free speech is free speech. Just because someone says something you don't like doesn't mean because you listened to it that in any way attributes your acceptance of what is said.

Trying to censor opinions doesn't make them go away. If anything it gives them more credability than they should get by allowing it to be an unPC opinion.

Ok I re-watched the conversation section of that episode. Here is a rough'ish transcript;

Biggins: "Gays had been really badly treated, and then suddenly there came a period were gay people were respected.. and you know they could go out there.. you could do things.. and then suddenly this.."

Biggins: "No I wouldn't say over night. But the difference happened... and then a killer disease came.. which was attributed to homosexuals."

Renee: "And you still believe it was really a homosexual disease?"

Biggins talking at the same time "No because I tell you what I think.. I think it was a bi-sexual disease if I'm going to be honest. A guy went to Africa."

Just because a statement is deemed to be offensive it should not by default follow that the person making it should be evicted/sacked/pilloried/silenced. Maybe people need to debate and challange and argue instead of being so quick to be seen as a victim and to run crying to the powers that be demanding safe spaces, no platforming, protection. what is wrong with people having different opinions? I agree with you, I too find it very interesting but not sure that Biggins was married to a woman before he came out as being gay or even had girlfriends but if this was the case then I'm even more surprised he's so bigoted towards bisexuals!

I'm sure Dan Wootton said this morning on the Lorraine show that Biggins was out as gay in the 70s and been with his partner for years.

As for the those that marry or keep girlfriends on the side I'm sure that the majority of them just can't come to terms with being gay, so fight against it, so get married and have children only to come out as gay later on when they can't fight their feelings any longer. It must be very hard and quite a dilemma for so many of them!

From what I see in the conversation I think its an opinion that quite a few gay people have when they see people living a double life.

I think its wrong to blame bi-sexuals though. I have a cousin who is 100% homosexual. But he's also fathered a child too. It was his journey of self discovery. Does that make him bi-sexual? I don't think so.

I don't think biggins made his point clearly. Maybe he hasn't thought through what his opinion is and spilled out what appeared to be some kind of conspiracy theory (along with Renee!).

Either way wouldn't it have been better for these opinions to be confronted and for people to actually learn from what they have done instead of labeling someone and pushing them off to coventry? How is that improving the world we live in?

This was my understanding too, but I still find it very strange why Biggins should be so bigoted towards bisexuals when he must have put up with a lot of nasty comments when he was a gay younger man! I would have thought him to be more compassionate personally!

I do believe he was taken out of the house for the Nazi and concentration camp for Jews comments which wasn't aired but got leaked. It seems that Katie's family made complaints and it went further than any of us know!

It's interesting that that they hauled him over a rather lame conversation about AIDS in Africa. It may be that they were desperately searching for an excuse to evict him at this point, now that news of the earlier conversation with Katie had leaked.
