Do you think it was Ed Balls that made Claudia scream?

Whilst I don't think he will be good, from the vids of him dancing he has more rhythm than the likes of Sergent or Widdie and just a bit better than Jeremy vine

Don't think so at all - there are numerous clips on YouTube of Ed dancing, not exactly Nureyev but he certainly is no John Sergeant !

Anyone who saw him on the BBC's 'Bake Off' could see he has the sort of personality that would go down well on Strictly - funny, self depreciating and enthusiastic.
I so hope they give him a great partner !

Yvette Cooper?

Seriosusly please don't give him to Natalie. I so want her to have a contender if she is in this year.

yes but on the dancing side he will be awful, there hasn't been a polician on SCD yet that can dance, look at Ann and Edwina, he will not be scoring much more for his dancing in comparision

I loved Ed Balls's response to the Strictly team tweet:

Perhaps she was imagining him dancing to "Great Balls of Fire".

Why would he necessarily be awful? Neither Ann or Edwina appeared to want to commit to learning to dance properly but I reckon he will. I admit, I'm not holding my breath waiting for his samba or cha cha, but since he is fairly musical, and very determined, I see no reason why he would not turn in a creditable waltz or quickstep. And he might even dance a reasonable jive. I reckon he'll be a mix. Up one week, down the next.

I think he will be the normal-for-Strictly almost 50 year old who hasn't danced before but has a blast.

Natalie's 5ft 9 so wouldn't be likely to get Ed at 5ft 11.
I think it will be Karen. That would be a fun partnership.

Vince Cable was in a special and was great. He did, of course, dance when younger!

By all accounts he's someone who loves dancing, albeit in a humorous, dad-dancey, Ainsley Harriot sorta way. I like those kind of contestants but feel sorry for them if they genuinely want to learn to dance but are then forced down the comedy route at the expense of actually learning to tango. That said- as a politician I'm sure he's got a realistic idea of how these things are packaged and is probably happy to fit in with the accepted narrative.

But I'm hoping for a likeable, fun guy in the way of Jeremy Vine, but with fewer plastic horses and face-palming literal theme-ing of 80s lyrics from his youth.

We know he is physically very fit
He played violin as a boy and has learnt to play the piano so he has musicality
He is used to speaking live and being in front of an audience, which will help his confidence
In his interview this morning he sounded very committed, I got the impression he was dedicated to Strictly and was not fitting it in around a hectic schedule
I also got the impression he wanted to learn a skill rather than just have fun
A good MOR contestant

I would rather not imagine it at all, odious man.

Am amazed to hear he is 5ft 11.... Always looks quite short to me....

Wouldn't it be nice if they announced a celebrity every day ? I hope they do that. Quite ( pleasantly ) surprised at seeing them starting to announce celebrities. Woooohooooo

Going by Bake Off, he's competitive but with a sense of humour and could have a decent run, he came across pretty well on Bake Off, so I could easily see him have a Jeremy Vine type length of run, but with potentially better dancing

I want Natalie with a contender too, she had her fair share of duds. Give him to one of newbies and see how they handle him.
